Roof shape/colours
Comments (1)Either tiles or colorbond (custom orb/corrugated/etc.) as both have good points and bad points. Aesthetics and price in most cases is what is comes down to at the end of the day. Tiles are good as they have a long lifespan if looked after. Terracotta in particular is a good choice depending on colour, house design, etc.. Tiles do look really good on the right house. But they are heavy and many roof structures are sagging under the weight if not constructed strong enough. They also hold the heat in summer and take a long time to cool. They are quite good in bushfire area's if constructed to the modern regulations. Colorbond, corrugated, custom orb (call it what you will) has a good lifespan. It's easy for builders to work with, is light weight compared to tiles, great colour choices, heat up really fast in summer but cools down very quickly when theres no sun. Also good in bushfire areas when constructed to the modern regulations. Custom orb is very cheap and is easy to use so is a overall great choice for almost every situation and this is what I'd recommend in your situation. Mainly due to the whole roof being removed. A Hip roof instead of the gable end roof would suit and really sharpen the style up. Easier for the builder as well. Gully or Jasper are both great colours for the roof but I'd get some samples first. These would look good against the existing brickwork and windows. I do like the greys in the Colorbond range but I don't think they'll suit the existing colours. Gutters same a roof colour but a lighter and crisper facia. You won't see much of the facia but it'll look great with a light highlight such as evening haze perhaps. I'd replace the timber veranda rails with new steel balustrading. A hardwood timber top rail would give it a nice lift as well. The existing blinds draw your eye to them rather than the house as a whole so I'd bin them. then some landscaping will give you a great house!...See MoreCharacter Villa with bad extension - should the extension go?
Comments (20)oops with the diagrams.. Note that the "shed like" part of the extension joins onto what must have been the original lean to that extends all along the original villa part. Note the pillar in the living area, that is structural. Another strange aspect is that the toilet juts out into the open plan space ( I think that could be remedied with $$s and it could fit into the main part of the family bathroom by taking out the old corner spa and putting in a smaller freestanding bath for example) . By the way, the "retreat" is actually a courtyard that could be a nice feature if properly landscaped etc. A new roof (to get a new roof line) might work on the shed like part, but the walls around the west and southern perimeters of the space are just windows/doors so I don't think they could support the weight of a "proper" roof rather than glass? Can you see that plan well enough and what info do you still need OkLouise (and others)? Thanks again for any ideas :)...See MoreNew roof colour and window/verandah colouring to match?
Comments (12)FINALLY after too long, have completed one of the upper cedar wall replacements (& the most needed)... still debating colours. Altho I was set on the cedarshield natural cedar oil product, everyone is pushing paint due to longevity... because we missmatched old with new boards on verandah section, don’t think cedarshield would bring out same colour evenly unless a lot of time trying to ‘clean’ the old boards top layer. SO, back to colours. Thoughts? Light and beachy/modern is attractive but don’t think it’d suit the simple timber cottage look it has had for so long. Thinking dark trim with lighter weatherboards?...See MoreFront Reno - how can i modernize with Terracotta roof tiles?
Comments (18)frcrooks, I wouldn't be changing the garage doors and removing the garage gable as the front of the garage will look like a poorly proportioned aircraft hanger. I think you have a good starting point with the teal garage doors and acid yellow front door. One of my clients lived in a very conservative suburb and trusted me with a choice for acid yellow cladding to the entry. Now that it is finished they love it and they get lots of compliments from neighbours about their exterior colours. Best of luck, please don't do another drab Melbourne colour scheme, and consider engaging a professional colour consultant who understands the architectural style of your home.
