Open shelves vs closed cabinets
Comments (14)Both. I know it depends on what you cook and how good your extractor fan is, but I've never had problems with things on shelves getting icky (when I was in a university provided studio flat, my book shelf was about 1 m from the cooker, and it never got greasy in the 3 years I was there), but equally, I wouldn't want everything on shelves, and not everything needs convenient access. It's basically a question of getting storage right for how you use the kitchen....See MoreOpen shelves in the kitchen
Comments (9)Open shelves Dan create visual interest if you use them to store common place everyday objects, ones that will be used enough to avoid collecting dust, or display Like minded items of interest, whether it be all white serving ware, as in country styled kitchens, or a grouping of recipe books. Whichever you choose, make sure the items are not static, and get moved around enough to remain visually interesting and dust free! Open shelves can be vertical shelving units, amongst your tall cabinets to fill awkward left over space, at upper level within easy reach of your, keeping Bench-tops free of clutter. They can merge into an adjoining desk space perfect to pay and store bills, or charge your iPad etc ready for ordering online. Open shelves can be further utilized to introduce colour or texture into a single palette kitchen, for example having timber open shelves or a colour can tie in accessories, appliances or even splash back colours. As a kitchen designer, I often include them into a design, and make sure they are a usable size, and flexible enough that if you tire of them, you could order a door to enclose them at some point. If you like the option of that, the shelves would be need to be recessed 20mm back from the adjoining door fronts so if one was added, they would all be seamless. This can be design feature by also adding a 20mm shadow line around the unit. To get an idea, take a look at the Formica colour palette brochure with a timber feature open unit, the feature colour here was yellow, and was designed by me. Good luck....See MoreNeed help with kitchen rangehood and open shelving combo
Comments (4)Sharon, I think they both look great. Trust your instincts. I personally would not be put off buying a house, because I didn't like range hood. I really like the sound of all the choices you have chosen for the kitchen....See MoreFloating wall shelves - yay or nay?
Comments (6)I think they look beautiful. You'll need to think about placement so they are not located where your grandson might be tempted to climb up to reach them or even try to climb them, but so they don't look wrongly proportioned for the space. I think shelves are a great idea for photos as you can change them around without all the hassle of measuring and redoing wall hooks, although I have to say I also love a well designed photo wall. Are you wanting to combine photos and other display objects on the same shelf or use specifically photo ledges with a groove for the frames? In the walk-in robe I'd guess you might have various possible solutions apart from floating shelves? dreamer is right, proper installation is the key. You need good quality shelves attached to studs. I've seen shelves advertised as suitable for attaching to the sheeting but with the proviso that they have less weight capacity. I'd go for attaching to the studs, which means finding them and hoping they are in a position which suits what you want to do. Which is why floating shelves are still on my 'to do' list....See Moreclubnev
