In the past, the bedroom wardrobe was a place where clothing was hidden from view. Today, we know how important it is to get clothing storage right and easy to access and we focus on a more functional, organised — open or closed — wardrobes that fit perfectly in our room to maximise every inch of every space.

In a previous post on this discussion forum I described my laundry bin...a 30L cardboard barrel which I lined with an old shower curtain and decorated still reigns supreme on the lid of my top loder, Nobody knows what it is and its a never ending source of admiration from an artistic angle. Lacking floor space the only option was to sit it up there or out on the veranda.It works as a cat toy too. It has, however, acquired some vents in the lid since some of my art shirts are often a bit oily and I learnt that some oils tend to self combist in enclosed spaces and can be the cause of house fires. Married? Where do you display your wedding photos?

When visiting other people's homes I always gravitate to the photos. I enjoy looking and talking about them. In my own home I have pics of mum and dad in their youth and they are in my bedroom. For my children and grandchildren's pics I have made a collage in the stairwell interspersed with photos of me and my mates in our heyday. It always gives my girlfriends a good laugh as we reminisce old times.

I have an iron pot holder hanging from the ceiling, I don't hang my pots because they don't have holes in the handles and are way too expensive to drill into. I hang baskets and utensils, plus a few vintage copper pieces like jugs I sometimes use for flowers, and a vintage copper colander. I use the baskets to harvest produce and flowers from the garden. I have a vintage kitchen with not many drawers, have had to be creative about utensil storage.

My husband started a tradition after we were married: he made the coffee and brought it into the bedroom so we could enjoy a quick chat before he headed off to work and I got up to ready the kids for school. Now that we're retired, we take turns making the coffee and usually sit to enjoy it in the family room while we check emails or catch up on the news feeds. Life isn't so hectic for us now and I'm so glad we still share the morning coffee tradition.

A WIR basically frees up a wall in the bedroom for other furniture but I find them much more versatile for organisation as needs change. I don't think needs stay static for long periods of time either which is why versatility is important to me.

The biggest thing to remember is to have a plan before you set out and make any changes. A WIR is the way most people seem to go these days when redoing up an old space, or if you are building a new home, but a WIR is becoming much more glamorous these days, and they are quiet a destination. If you going to have a WIR, one of the biggest considerations is to decide if you are going to have doors, or if its all going to be open.

Now if you are quiet a tidy person, then a full open WIR will be fine for you, but if you are someone that is not so tidy or good at putting things away, then I suggest that you finish of the WIR with some doors to hide any mess.

Then the next major step is to make sure that if you are designing or getting it designed, that you have the right amount of areas for the right amount of each category of hanging to folding ratio, and also shoes and accessory storage too.

There is obviously many more things to consider, but these are two major ones that people get wrong or don't consider.

At the end of the day, each style of wardrobe has its pros and cons, but to date the WIR robe style dressing room is still the most popular, and I myself love this style because there is so much you can do to cater for individual needs.
