Help Modernising our 1970's Brick Home Exterior
Comments (36)This is just like our Mediterranean house in Canberra. It was rendered white which never cracked or got mould on it, though I would prefer it to be done in a modern colour like our current home on the Gold Coast which is a rich sand colour with a heavy bagged appearance that has faded from a strong dark sand. With beautiful dark patterned orangey tiles all outside that reflect their colour on the walls during the day it is quite magical. Roof tiles also spray painted after being re pointed. I suggest you amplify the lovely quality of arches and don't go for what is trendy. But go with colour scheme for the house design. At our entrance there is a built up garden courtyard feature with wonderful iron gates and a large water feature in the courtyard that the lounge room looks out to and has the French doors that also opened onto the courtyard garden. Commence the courtyard wall to the left side of the steps and create a flat area at the gated entrance where we had a north single gate and a west double gate. The Pines were planted on the outside of this courtyard wall and gave extra privacy and blocked the westerly afternoon sun. The house always looked impressive, yet was just a simple presentation....See MoreModernising exterior
Comments (14)I agree with the brickwork being rather a good basic, leave it as is, maybe match all the trim work, which would include the garage door, facia board, down pipes, gutters etc (basically anything not brickwork!) to the window frames/driveway drain, which seem to be a "monument" black. Then maybe clad the letter box in a grey stone to tie into the driveway or charcoal black to tie into the trims, I'd also echo the light grey in any new or existing pathways... Unless you're happy to change the driveway colour in the first place, but I get the feeling keeping costs down, while getting the most impact is important. Lastly some modern landscaping and a low cost fence also in monument, maybe a sleek modern metal one. Like this: But about half the height, would really help zone and sharpen the bounaries, giving a semi formal, yet modern feel. I noticed you have a similar wooden one at the side of the house, if it's too costly to replace to match the front one, just paint it! Whatever you decide, remember to have fun!!...See MoreUgly duckling needs a facelift
Comments (15)Have you considered cover over the quoins with a grey stone or concrete cladding quoin? Not sure where you are but Gosford quarries has some good products. The grey stone would suit the charcoal you have painted the balcony but also work with your other bricks, match the mortar colour and match the roof. I actually like quoins on houses but agree the red colour of yours is not the prettiest example Ive seen....See MoreUgly, dated house needs a facelift.
Comments (4)100% agree with Dr Retro -- I'd go slightly further too . The house was designed to have those fake 'Tudor' beams -- embrace them . The roof is fading , and the green is dated -- that would be the place to go Surfmist or slightly greyer . White walls , charcoal tudor timber , do that back pergoda posts and beams in charcoal , the fences in charcoal EXCEPT the existing side fence/gate that is white . The upstairs veranda and posts may be brown ( hard to tell on the computer ) -- change to charcoal . Probably all it needs , unless you want a bit of stand-out ( yes , that's me ) -- it looks like the front door is varnished , and 4 glass panels ? If its okay , leave as is , or stain a bit darker . But if it needs work -- paint it bright red , orange or sunshine yellow , AND do the gutters to match . White , grey , charcoal , red tinges to the pathways , and a splash of colour ....See MoreLesleyH
