Hi. Good question from Gallifrey re ceiling height. I'm also wondering if you plan to install new fixture in same spot as the current ceiling oyster? And if you have your piano lid open most of the time? So height of light you are looking for is what? I like the idea of a Venetian chandelier, similar to the red one posted above. What about in black?

If you are in New Zealand, I have often found great lights (and a big range) at Lighting Plus. I had 3 female joeys and two bedrooms which led to constant 2 -v- 1 situations so nights were generally a game of musical beds. There was always one child who needed time out or was given time out. When we added the extra bedroom, the serenity was bliss. They could still share when they wanted but it was all up to them, it was not forced on them so relationships definitely improved after that. I think the age of the children and the age difference is a very important aspect. Younger children are more than happy to share for the security and comfort when the lights go out. Older children need their space and privacy especially for study. Children after puberty can get extremely sensitive about their bodies and need privacy more than ever in this adjustment period. You cannot expect to put say an 8 year old with a 3 year old - by 8 kids are usually developing attachments to "special" keepsakes, something 3 year olds don't understand and this can cause a lot of resentment when things get broken or trashed. Pre children I always felt them sharing bedrooms would lead to wonderful relationships, the children would learn to share, care and appreciate each other. Now I'm older and wiser, separate bedrooms is sanity for everyone.

I wouldn't add any niches for decorative items as they are a bit dated, look a bit busy, and are hard to find anything that is shallow enough and tall enough to look any good. They were common in project homes of the 1990's but are well past their use-by date. You haven't mentioned the size of your chandeliers, however with the height of your ceilings they can't be too low. I would suggest hanging one over the centre of the dining table so that when seated the chandelier does not interrupt your line of sight across the table. This will allow for a decent size chandelier that you won't walk into. The second one I would add to the corner of the upstairs rumpus room , directly above the corner table in the plan. This will illuminate the stairs, but still be easy to access to change bulbs. It can be a similar height to the one in the dining room and its location will mean that people won't walk into it. Don't hang your chandelier above your stairwell as they do need maintenance for regular cleaning and changing bulbs, and they are hard to reach over stairs. Don't hang your chandeleir in the front living room as it is an unusual informal shape with the integration of the entrance hall and it will always look off-centre.
