I find that the warm white throws too much yellow especially on white walls...I am thinking the 4000K wont be too bright white...maybe an in between

For that relaxing feeling in bedrooms and living spaces, opt for warm temperate lights. Keep it cool in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. However colour temperatures should be consistent throughout if its an open plan space.

I would keep it all the same everywhere in the house - Not gonna change colour of lights from one room to another....will be doing 4000K everywhere which is an in between of warm and cool

I absolutely agree with the 4000k. It's an in between what some call warm (2700 - 3000k) + Daylight (5000k). Lumens however is different. It measures the light output eg. in old terms 60w light is almost equivalent to 806 lumens. You can vary your lumens throughout different rooms to suit your needs or as mentioned above, choose a larger lumen output and install dimmers. Just make sure the light fittings you are selecting are dimmable as you may find not all LED's are.

Further to the discussion, I would also advise not to rely on one method of lighting. Think floor lamps, pendants, wall fixtures etc. to alter the mood and ambience to suit your needs.

Keeping your colour temperature consistent makes the light flow from one room to another, however I do agree with the others above to create a more relaxed and ambient feel you would need to use warm white. However, if you have fallen in love with 4000k then stick to that! You don't need to keep your floor lamps and table lamps consistent with 4000k as you may want to opt for a lower colour temperature for these to create a more intimate setting. When buying LED downlights be sure to consider the price against what you are getting, new units should be complete with frame, globe and driver attached with a flex and plug these are easy for installation and usually come with a min, 2 year warranty.

Don't forget it's also a great idea to separate your lights into different circuits if you feel that turning on all the lights will be too intense. This allows you complete control over the amount of light output by turning on different switches, plus with dimmers you will master the perfect lighting for every occasion.

My last point would be to test the downlight out before purchasing all the lights for your home, if you are still hesitant about what colour you want to go for purchase 1 unit to test out - most are attached to flex and plug so you can just plug it into a powerpoint to test.
