Need help with the kitchen

we have a troublesome kitchen. It is double brick in a house architecturally designed and built in 1970's and predominantly brick. We have had the previous plaster board removed from part of the kitchen to prepare for plaster board to cover all the brickwork. A friend, whose opinion I admire, saw the room and said she thought we should keep with the brick as its so attractive ( apart from the glue on the areas previously plaster boarded.) My problem is ...should we continue with our original idea to plaster it all and go for the off white cupboards/surfaces etc or go down the other path my friend suggests. This would mean going for other colours in the surfaces or wood. I should add...the frig and stove ( stainless steel)are contained in brick booths and this faces the open plan dining/lounge. I would appreciate help or do you require a photograph?

photos would be great. Plasterboard is such a generic finish, I would always urge you to expose the brickwork if you can - it has so much more character.

You can always paint or whitewash the brick or even 'bag' it if you want a slightly different finish. Have a look at this project which might give you some inspiration: http://www.archdaily.com/796791/mews-house-russell-jones

You might also consider that exposing the brickwork allows you to utilise the thermal mass of the wall (not possible when lined with plasterboard). What this means it that the bulk of the brickwork can be used to store some heat during warmer months, helping to keep the room cool. This heat is then release back into the room at night or during the cooler months helping to regulate internal temperatures.

If you have length along the wall to house cabinetry, consider stepping out the joinery, so start with a 300mm deep bookshelf full height as a bridge between the new and old, and then place a deeper pantry etc after it. A bookshelf that can house small app.lances, recipe books, bowls or decorative items can work within the traditional fireplace, but also a modern kitchen fit out. Your joinery style can be modern and still include a traditional element like a bookshelf. I would then also build one on the other side for symmetry.

I think the bench/breakfast bar along the deck - with bi-fold windows is a fabulous idea. The storage space under the stairs makes more sense to me than a faux fire. An extendable table is definitely the way to go, especially if it is just the two of you most of the time. As for the kitchen sink - I can only suggest that you move your wall cabinet further right - extending the bench and then the sink can be placed further to the right. Downlights above kitchen bench - we have downlights about a metre apart and they provide excellent coverage. With regards to the cupboards being different in living/kitchen areas. I personally think that if you are going all white, they could be identical - creating continuity.

Thank you kooky_karen. Now I am thinking about putting together your idea of removing angled bench, putting L one after building a new wall as jbantick idea. Angled wall is internal and separates lounge room from family. I forgot about vinyls. Thank you for this reminder. We are older couple and it will make a lot easier to keep it clean. I will try to find ( any suggestions here?) best and beautiful vinyl with warm wood feel and look.
