How can I improve my kitchen for move in date?

Getting ready for move in date. Can't decide on a color to paint the cabinet doors. was thinking white with white walls would make the room look bigger. I would go with brown but I think it would clash with the counter tops, although the wood is darker on the outside of the cabinets. I am getting stainless steel appliances and painting the baseboard also.

It doesn't look like you get a lot of natural light near the stove part of the kitchen. I would paint them either white or a very light gray. That will help modernize the space and keep it light in stead of feeling dark and small.

I'd move in and think about it for a while before painting the cabinets. A single overhead light isn't adequate, put in under cabinet LED at the very least, hat will brighten things up right there. A good scrubbing needs to be done before painting and that might change your mind about the way the kitchen looks. The new appliance color will change things too. Can you see how white and your current surfaces are fighting?

If you must paint now don't paint pure white as the floor, counter and backsplash would look dingy. Choose a warm pale gray to beige to greige instead and it would be best to buy samples and paint on boards before committing as those colors have undertones. You do not want to be surprised by purple, green, blue, yellow or mauve cabinets with your beige/tan/brown/stainless surfaces!

Even though that is a fairly small space you could put some decorative trellises just in front of the fence with some ever flowering vines on them. Install a paver patio between them and the windows you hope to transform into doors.. You could also have the wisteria trained onto a pergola that would create a little shade for the patio as well. Some beautiful potted specimens/flowers and a couple of attractive outdoor chairs and you would have created a beautiful "picture" to act as a focus to the room. Additionally you have extra space for entertaining. Obviously the reason the previous owner obscured the window was because there wasn't much to look at. By creating a "view," you change the dynamic of the room as well as getting the light you want. Actual light will brighten the room like no change of floor would.

Having lived for years with a front loader in the kitchen under counter and now with a good sized laundry I am resenting the laundry for the space it wastes! I would rather have a "european solution" and a good en-suit and walk in :) really it is a matter of how you want to live, in reality if you spend your life considering resale you won't enjoy your home, prospective purchasers will love or hate whatever you do, those that don't want a space solution will be the ones who want the big ensuite and robe anyway! Do it with love then others will love it too, good luck

Thanks to the others who've replied. You've really given us something to think about. We have heard from a few people (including comments here) that we should live in it for a while before making major reno decisions. It's also become clear that moving the kitchen down to the end is not neccessarily the best idea. We need to think through this a bit more. Totally get that breaking down the wall may not be as desirable for a family with teenagers. We have a 3 and 6 year old at the moment, which is why we're thinking of having an open plan. I'd like to have a play area for them to do craft etc somewhere in the living area where I can see them. That is playing into the design consideration. I really like siriuskey's idea of extending the kitchen into the original dining area, though my concern is that the dining area won't really get used much (other than dinner time) because it's more "isolated". Also if we're entertaining, guests from outside will have to walk through the living area, down the hall or through the kitchen, to get to the dining room. Wonder how we'll get around that... I also like oklouise's idea on extending the kitchen into the alfresco (however would that mean moving the roof line, i.e. costly?). Would love to consider that too... Not sure where you guys are all from, but would you recommend for us to hire someone virtual to come up with some designs for us? Or should we definitely hire someone local who can see the space? Sorry, I can't send photos at the moment as we are having our kitchen renovated and all the lounge furniture is stacked and covered. Our house was built in 1960 but everyone thinks it is a seventies house because it looks just like them. We have been progressively renovating and the kitchen is the last thing to do. We actually bought mid century modern style furniture from the Modern Furniture shop in New Farm/ Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, and a parker dining suite from an antique shop. (My partner hates clutter.) The area in our house that is the same as the one where you have your TV actually has had a set of internal stairs cut into it going down, and we have a piano in the remaining space with our buffet up against the balustrade. We did have our dining suite in the same space as you have yours, but it is an 8 seater, so we swapped the dining and lounge furniture and put our 2 seater sofa, 2 armchairs and oval glass coffee table against the wall opposite the kitchen. We use both more now because the dining space is bigger and the lounge space is cosy and inviting. We have a large area downstairs which we have turned into a combination mancave/TV area/ entertainment, casual dining and summer living space as the concrete floor keeps it cool and comfortable. What I love about a big space like this is that you can change it around if you find it's not working for you as it is, or if you just feel like a change. Having to keep to the TV points reduces that flexibility a bit, but maybe you could consider swapping around the dining area? It's just a matter of figuring out what works best for how you like to live, and trying out different configurations might help you do that.
