Lighting for room with beams

I'd like some advice on new lighting for this room . The room has beams and the ceilings are fairly low especially as I have moved the table so one of the lights is not directly over it. The light which isn't over the table is the one with an issue as it may be knocked by a very tall person or a little dancing.

In the evening photo , to the left of the room, is also a sliding door leading outdoors to a courtyard .

-other advice is also welcome

Yes paint white and remove carpet. Paint is cheap as are professional painters. Painters charge what, say $60 per hour so just work out how long it would take you to do it and include setting up, cleaning before and after, any prep work, etc. Then multiply by 60. If existing floorboards under carpet then that would be terrific. Otherwise if no floorboards then it could not be so straightforward. Too difficult to estimate costs really as we don't know how large the spaces are.

Thoughts/opinions appreciated and specific recommendations in providing better lighting to the kitchen without running wires through the timber beams. Either fixing some lighting to the wall above the window, or individual spotlights along the beams. Thanks!

Ok thanks for the tip. I just purchased my paint today so will start on the walls in the morning. I will leave the beam enclosed for now, so once the walls are white the beams should blend in too then. I also had a look under the stairs where the beam continues and then wondered would the top of the beam be the top of the gyprock? If the gyprock hung lower than the top of the beam that would be a hard fix.

To make it more modern I would use couple of this spotlights in between each beam ( rafters)

Hey there sonicamoya. not sure if you've made your decision yet, but have you considered halogen downlights with a dimmer?

I also find floor lamps, like the one below, push light out and around, as opposed to just upwards. They are brilliant at adding light to a room:

One last thing - consider adding some outdoor lighting, too. You could use outdoor fairy lights or solar garden lights. This will make the space feel less consumed with darkness, and encourage more flow between indoor and outdoor areas.
