New chair style?

I have inherited this beautiful table from my grandmother, which I love but thinking the chairs are too dark for our new dining area. Any ideas? My hubby thought a white backed chair with timber seat in a more country style might work (as in second pic)?? The house is a new build with very plain off white walls and our furniture is very eclectic as I have a few inherited pieces but we are feeling a bit of relaxed coastal/country style vibe in the future.

did granny also leave damask table cloths which would lighten the look instantly and, although i was very shocked at first, my sister in law PAINTED the antique chairs left to them and added some country style fabric seats and now uses the chairs with a modern table and it looks fabulous and is a daily reminder of dear old granny and i think she'd agree that you should mix and match what you like in your own home

Hahaha yes, in fact I used the tablecloth on Xmas day! So the table I inherited but chairs are not old. They were ok in our old house which had a much bigger dining area. It just seems so closed in. Husband suggested painting table but I just couldn't do it....

OK... final grasp at a straw - your set of chairs for when they are not visiting, and when extended family come over, bring out fold out chairs with washable slipcovers? I know how difficult it is when you want to have a room that you like but you are having to adapt it for just for the one-off occasions and not as you would like it ideally. Perhaps that might work so you get what you want (most of the time!)

I think stay away from grey, you need towels that pop. Mint and lemon, even fluoro orange (I know, I know, it sounds ghastly) but Aura by Tracie Ellis have a divine range of beautiful geometrics, not block colours. Used all of them recently and all selections are fabulous. Comfort wise the spindle chairs and those with wood backings can have their drawbacks if you plan to sit for a while. So style, usage and personal taste need to all be taken into consideration.

Hi again not sure what your budget is but these cushions are lovely great colour range and textures the brand is eadie just google them send you some pics of mine the others found in opp shops and put feather inserts in them love cushions

I think it is the structure & style of the chairs, rather than their colour which needs to be changed. Look for a chair with an open back, such as those shared by 'oskuee' and you'll be amazed at the difference. That said, I'm a big fan of colour pops and eclectic mixes so you could also consider metal, wooden or plastic chairs in various colours

Love the 2nd & 3rd chairs in oskuee's individual pics; I think their open backs and lighter timbers would contrast really well with your wonderful table. And they look pretty comfortable. In any case, it's the openness of them against the grandeur or the old table that works.

I had the same look as yours but I updated without losing the comfort of the chairs. I bought chair covers from spotlight. The chairs will never date in style, they just need a new color.

We have the perfect dining chairs for your table! All of them are from Shack Homewares & I just saw they have an option your husband may like too which goes with more of a Hamptons vibe in my opinion.

Whereas this Oak & Linen combination may be more suited to your coffee table & theme of your home.

Custom made chair covers would lighten the look and give you the relaxed look you are after. Cheaper than new chairs and easy to wash too!
