Plaster or brick fireplace?
Comments (2)@ borvapeople..How about natural light stone cladding over the fireplace and plaster the walls? I covered my brick fireplace in randomly arranged pieces of Ribbinstone. The walls on either side were and still are hoop pine VJ boards. The fireplace was red brick with a dark shellacked timber surround and was what one would term adequate and functional but very dark and was the first thing you saw coming into the room. That was many, nany years ago and everyone then and everyone now has positive remarks. My fireplace was sort of 'stuck' in an otherwise timber wall and contained with the timber surround...it looked "patchy", felt claustrophobic so we extended the Ribbon Stone on heavy fireproof sheeting right up to the 10ft ceiling. The stone pieces were fixed individually and at random with fireproof masonry glue. See what you think. This PIC was taken before I decided to have a log combustion heater inserted in the fireplace (flue goes up the brick chimney) so that I could have the fire going all night....gets very cold here in wimter and this room is adjacent to the main bedroom. Cosy and attractive, gave an entire new ambience to both rooms as I inserted a large fretwork panel in the timber wall between the rooms to allow the heat to flow freely into the bedroom....See MoreUpdated Ugly Brick Fireplace and

Comments (3)guess you would have completed the update by now but just in case, They built great houses in the 70"s, a lot had concrete tiled roofs, have them checked and if sound paint them grey along with gutter and barge boards as you suggested but please do a soft grey otherwise it will look too top heavy, down pipes same colour as bricks (photo of soft grey roof) Paint garage doors same as brick colour minus the stripe, Front entrance update would help, does this open into a small foyer Railing, windows painted, I prefer black for this, I have attached a photo of a house that the owners had the roof painted, they painted all the metal windows themselves, said it was easy. Paving in front of entrance, this photo shows they used white pebbles and pavers with a small screen, plus a new hedge. similar entrance doors to these let in much needed light as these houses can be quite dark...See MoreUgly Brick Fireplace
Comments (9)Thanks for all yoir great ideas. I had thought of a sky light and adding a second pendant light above the entrance stairs which run behind the fireplace. I would lobe to paint the ceiling and beams but its rough stained wood and will take a professional big job for that. So trying to see what other options I have. I may paint all walls and leave fireplace... maybe roughen the bricks by adding more mortar inbetween. Its been great to get some insight so thank you all!!...See Morepetapea
