Styling the top of a cabinet

Help! It's an empty space versus my 9ft ceilings. What do you out up here? I am experimenting with a row (much longer than this) of matching books. Any other ideas ? Excuse the ugly plant and the mess!

Nothing on top...yes, less is more. Put the baskets at the base of the cabinet filled with things you actually use...yarn, magazines, etc. Every tall piece of furniture does not need something on top. That's a beautiful cabinet and my advice is don't junk up the top. Turn your attentions to the rest of the room.

Depending on the style of the rest of the room, baskets can look nice. Just be sure to keep it simple - less is more and all that.

What colour baskets would you think? All the trim is white but maybe metal to tie in the industrial feel of the kitchen?

I just finished my kitchen with Laminex riven wood grain in sublime teak, Caesarstone buttermilk bench top and splash back, and Preference oak in parana colour. It is an earth tone brownish hue and am quite happy with that. Your greyish colour theme with dark wood accent is nice. There are many shades of wood floor that you can choose to match or contrast with the rest of kitchen.

Looking through photos, I'm seeing some nice combinations. Slab style cabinets then the lighting, window trim, furniture and tap ware in more traditional style. The use of timber helps too. ie. bench tops. IMO metal would be too modern with the space and the rusticity of the cabinet. I would use either white ceramic, to tie in with your trim work, or a nice mixture of natural fibres like wicker. Also, I would keep the pieces large and have only a few of them. Please see pics.

I saw a cupboard once with two large candle vases with large white candles in them ( different sizes) at one side of the cupboard, on the other was a medium sized picture frame that held 5 photo in it of various sizes. and in from of that was a little cream color vase/plant, and in front of the candle vases were a sign in white that had "HOME" on it.

To the side of it you can either put a white stool like table with a lamp on it or a chair with two cushions.

Books would only collect dust. If anything I'd use one large basket or perhaps one large white urn like the one on the left in the Kim Nichols photo above. Yes, fake tree...a big no no!

Its a beautiful piece of furniture - let it shine on its own. Agree less is more, put nothing on top as it doesn't need it.

I have to agree regarding the dust factor, unless it is easily reachable it is best not to add anything on top that way it is easily cleaned with hoover or damp duster. If not very high, I would add samples given above.

I would not want to have to climb on a step stool every week to dust decorations on top of the cabinet.

If you feel you MUST have something, I like the two photos Judy M posted.
