Salvage my toilet room!
Comments (20)Hi Neryl, A great little project that you can get a lot of satisfaction from. I wouldn't treat this room in isolation and instead look at making sure the rest of the house influences your decisions. There are some great suggestions here. My thoughts: - Replace floor tiles and tile the walls to the underside arch of the window. Use a white Johnson tile in brick format with black grouting, very economical. - No curtain on the window but I like the idea of the shutter, or use a film on the window but only if privacy is an issue. - Paint window frame white - Paint the rest of the room a feature colour - something rich and in keeping with the house. From the door handles I get the feeling the house is 30's/40s??? This will warm & tighten up the room with class. Could be a deep grey or green. - New wall hung vanity unit, keep it simple. Caroma have a great vintage range that are timeless, not faux replica. - If budget permits, a new toilet suite. Porcher have some economical models from discontinued lines, like the older style Cygnet. They come with the full warranty and are close coupled to reduce cleaning in nooks and crannies. - a new light fitting - say a simple frosted sphere, almost like a cotton ball. - a wall hung mirror in frame rather than anything contemporary. - wall mount everything including the toilet brush. All the best, and enjoy the transformation! Rebecca...See MoreQuestion to Dr Retro - Houzz AUST. MID CENTURY HOME GURU
Comments (5)Hey Creativelychallenged - I just stumbled across your question, and your bathroom is probably finished by now. Sorry but Houzz doesn't seem to flag pros if you include their name in your question. But back to your question. Mid-century covers a lot of decades (depending on who you ask) and there are lots of flavours. A really good resource I have set up for mid-century bathroom inspiration is my Pinterest board with a collection of photos of unrenovated mid-century bathrooms. https://www.pinterest.com.au/secretdesign/bathrooms-original-mid-century-modern/ A lot of those bathrooms from the 1950's and 1960's use the classic gloss Johnsons ceramic tile in a stack bond pattern. Mostly in a square tile measuring 152 x 152 mm. Later bathrooms used a rectangular format tile in a stack bond pattern. I don't think I have ever seen a herringbone pattern mosaic used in an original mid-century bathroom on the wall. The tiny patterned mosaic tiles were generally used on the floor, often in a random looking pattern. In the later decades they did use mosaics on bathroom walls, but in a stack bond pattern, never herringbone. Comments (11)This may sound horrible but I keep thinking black tiles definitely where the range hood is going . ...could it be The hero of the kitchen area ? The rest of the tiling in white but not to the ceiling ( too commercial or bathroomish for my liking ) ..I would consider white floating shelves on the narrow walls on either end of your windows to add practicality to the modern look . As for Tiling...the area you have is generally is not a large space for tiling unless you go to the ceiling so I would keep the tiling low no matter which design you choose stacked or other. However, I would tile the range hood area up to the window line (in white to complete the white tile look or black to make the big bold black range hood stand out and take centre stage .) I also love Herringbone tiles for modern kitchens /bathrooms. But not knowing how busy your bench is plain stack may be the way to go . Good luck ENJOY your kitchen !...See MoreClean And Modern , or Art Deco , For My Next Home ?
Comments (34)Things are ticking along . We have a whole lot of long skinny flush-mounted LED taillights -- they won't be fitted until we take Frankie off the road to re-paint , as the existing lights come off , and these ones will need holes cut , the exterior repainted , then these lights bonded ( glued ) in . The Mercedes seats have had new certified mounts made ( being a safety item , we spent about $150 getting them certified -- keeps it legal , although there are literally thousands of vehicles out there that have had seats changed , and no certs ) and we made little 'boxes' that have walnut tops , and all the controls for the electric seats are in these ( on Merc cars , they are on the doors , but our auto sparky has made new mini wiring looms ) . We dropped the seats to the upholsterer last week , so in the next month or so they will be recovered -- a sort of bone/cream leather for the surrounds , and red leather with diamond stitching up the middles . This is almost what my cab looks like , mine has 1980's Falcon or similar bucket seats in a grey vinyl . I assume that was done so that there is only the 2 seats , and you can get through to the back , whereas in the pic with 3 seats , you can't . My interior is the same colours -- 3 different charcoal/grey tones on the dash , then a black on the doors ( why , I have no idea -- I would have thought charcoal would have been better ? ) . Once the seats are back and fitted , I am tempted to get the door cards redone -- do a padded charcoal vinyl that matches one of the dash colours , but do a 'scallop' from the rear of each door in the lighter leather , then a red maybe 150mm wide scallop in the middle . I feel that will tie in the doors , the dash and the seats better . The booth seating ( table and chairs basically ) in the rear will get done the same cream/bone and red leather , to tie it in a bit more . Which then brings up 1 problem . You may have noticed I have used a downloaded pic , and I was going to post a few 'before' pics of the cab and the rear , so you can see it in its 90's wooden and tacky lino glory , but that turns out to be a problem . All the 'before' pics I have are ones that the last owner e-mailed to me . I downloaded them all , they are still on my computer , I can look at them no problem . BUT for some reason , they aren't JPG's -- they show as 'Google Chrome Files' , and I can't work out if I can post them here -- I've tried but nothing happens . Are there any experts that know how to post these 'files' ( pictures ) ?...See Moreweewelshdragon
