Best window covering for large stacker doors?

7 years agoIn our previous home, we had walls of sliding doors and no idea how to cover them in the winter. We eventually went with roller blinds as these could sit about the doors without really being seen. See the photo attached. We had them with thermal backing to ensure the best warmth available. In the photo you can just make them out at the top of the kitchen window.

Comments (5)Large glass doors will be a major heat leaker... depending on your aspect and the time of the year, leaking heat into the house or out of it. Nothing better than triple block curtains with pelmets (with a top), that go all the way to the floor and extend past the window. Not quite as good thermally but better for adjusting light into the room while maintaining privacy are timber (not plastic) shutters, fitted inside the frame of the window, and again down to the floor... so that the entire window pane is covered when the shutters are closed. Comments (2)I personally like the simplicity of roller blinds, especially since they're almost invisible when "up". That means that they don't detract from the great "open" expanse that a sliding stacker creates. But, they obviously have their negatives since they couldn't be down if you wanted the doors open for breeze/airflow and you'd probably need to have more than one blind open at any time since multiple rollers would be controlled by a single cord/chain. Sheer curtains and sliding panel blinds can also look nice. I'm not such a fan of these, as they need to be "bunched" at one end (or both ends) and they obscure the visual appeal of the sliding stacker doors. Comments (5)stackers open up wider but glass doors are quite heavy so suggest more narrow panels rather than less wider heavier sliders...if planned in advance the bottom tracks can be recessed into a suitable floor to reduce trip hazards..we have three stacking panels with an extra matched height section with an awning window for ventilation when we don't want to open the door and/or in bad weather..the doors and window are connected into one tall wide section of 4 equal sized panels..Given the ideal situation i would also have window sections across the top for extra height and include electric openers that we have used elsewhere and find are very useful for opening high windows without having to climb up something to reach...See Morebifold bs stacker doors
Comments (13)Hi Beau , this is my personal preference only. I would have stacker doors and sheer linen curtains. The glass doesn’t need to be double glazed if noise it not a problem, if it is go with double glazed but it won’t block noise completely, it wilI reduce it. I like the diffused light the sheers offer and I like the idea of fully controlling how much light and air I have. Double glazing is a something to consider if there will be pool noise or traffic noise and this is a serious home office. Good luck....See More

6 years agoHave to agree with Gallifrey with no window coverings but using external shutters on on the outdoor space, these can be sliding stacking etc. We are on the mid north coast of NSW and believe me screens are important over the warmer months these could also be applied to the outdoor space, simple fixed doesn't block the outlook

6 years agoSliding doors looking out towards a view are always tricky as the last thing you want to do is reduce or detract from the outlook. Depending on the layout of the room a track with corner bends that wraps around at either end may work. This way the curtains could stack around the corner. Roller blinds are simple, cost effective and very functional but curtains, even in a light sheer fabric, will add a dimension of warmth and sophistication that is not easily achieved with rollers. If you are thinking of blinds look at having the rollers recessed so they disappear when they are not in use.
