Carrera bench top arrived chipped. Is this normal??

So my new bathroom bench tops arrived 2 weeks ago, and they had a few indentations or 'chips' in them. I originally wanted them polished but was talked out of that, and assured honed was a better way to go. I noticed these imperfections the next day in better light. I was told that all it needed was a service call from the stonemason company, and they would buff and fix it all on site. I didn't stress and accepted that story. They came a few days later and did something, I'm assuming they filled the small pockets. However the following day after it had dried properly...those small dents were still present, and the stone isn't looking gleaming new & has acid etching already! I called them again, and they came a 2nd time to try to fix it. Its now looking 60% better i'll admit....but i still see the some chips & imperfection and I'm not happy. Is this normal with Carrera stone? My expectation is to see a smooth gorgeous new slab of stone upon delivery and installation...with No Indentations or Chipping. What should i do?? They say its normal and sometimes this happens as its a natural stone. Really?? As a consumer I'm not feeling this is acceptable or reasonable. Any suggestions appreciated...thanks!

So carrera is marble and marble has indentations. They can fill it in with resin type putty thing, which I think you were hoping they would do.
Otherwise it's totally normal to have 'chips' and indentations on marble.

If you have a stone or imitation stone benchtop, you pay a lot for that benchtop and the streamlined look, and having two sinks and a drainer cut out of that top doesn't make a lot of economic or visual sense. I have a single undermount sink with a portable drainer, which I quite like. I'd probably suggest a flushmount as a good alternative, in that it doesn't take out so much of the expensive stone. If you need a double sink with drainboard, I'd be looking at alternatives, and I was very fond of the corian-type benchtop in our last house.

Hi All, It sounds like tumeric and grease are the worst culprits for staining. We are looking to put the Cloudburst in our kitchen as our island and backsplash, but I'm very nervous. I love to cook and host. I also LOVE the look of this stone and would like to make it work if we can. Are there any bakers on this thread that have experience with these countertops? If you are rolling out dough or baking with greasy dough, how has that experience been? What if you get butter/oil on it? Any tips? Do you cover the counter before doing your baking etc.? I imagine beet juice would also be a nightmare?

Oh this project grows. I’m thinking the kitchen/laundry access is probably worthwhile (light, access, etc). I’m liking the more contemporary layouts, compared to the u version that I liked at an earlier date. Siriuskey your comments about that version being too wide were important. (I eventually remembered design issues with my mum’s last kitchen which was a u and too wide and while it felt spacious, it was a bit ‘not quite right’). oklouises’ wed 5.26pm (2nd option) is probably my preferred option at this stage. I think that would be functional and satisfies my wish list pretty well. Layout and furnishing the greater space is still on the go. I must say, I’ve found everyone’s input with this project so creative and helpful.

Hi Mel, yes we have successfully used other products to give a formply look, whilst achieving increased durability and sustainability with the solution provided. Any material used for interior joinery needs to suit the purpose. Plywoods come in different grades and not all are suitable for interior joinery and furniture; that is why some people complain they have used ply and it has bellied or bowed. If the plywood fits the purpose, the outcome can be gorgeous and durable.

All natural products can come with small chips and scuffs, but as Hannah Mentioned there are ways around it, but then that also depends all on pricing, they may of talked you out of polishing it due to the fact as soon as it becomes polished every single flaw regardless how small sticks out very bad, and to make it absolutely perfect requires a lot of time and elbow grease which will cost a Pretty Penny, and once done you will have to be very careful using in order not to damage the finish and bring back those marks you dont like so much. Remember Quality and PERFECTION comes at a price

thanks for your reply and info guys. So i get that there are little air pockets in the stone and that small little chips or indentations can sometimes occur. The stonemason company has been out twice to fix this. They tried filling it with something like a putty mixed with water etc. They are still not totally filled and smoothe but 70% improvement so lets sat I'm ok with that part...but I'm not happy with the fact the stone now doesn't look new and smooth and it had many acid etches in it already! I know this would happen...but i wanted to be the one who made the mess...didnt expect it to be like that from new.

Have others experienced this? & Am i being unrealistic to ask them to give me a new slab??

If it is not what you ordered and paid for, and they have not fixed it then i say you should if you are not happy, do it asap and dont wait, longer you wait the harder it will be for you to get a replacement
