Actual sisal can't be cleaned with the same methods as carpet or wool.

I am inclined to agree that sisal works well in a very non traffic-y area, & certainly in the dining room, not a good idea. We do not wear shoes in the house. My wood floors are almost 100 years old, have been refinished & certainly not perfect. i like look of no rug, but that may be impractical.

I love the look of sisal until it gets dirty, which is why a wool sisal would be more practical.

First off a rug under the dining table need stop be very cleanable especially if you eat there frequently have kids and pets. Sisal does not clean well at all. If you wet it it tends to warp. Your solution is to ether get a dark color or do as JudyG Design suggest and look at the PET carpets from Dash and Albert. They are a little more $$ but can be cleaned, even hosed off outside. They look a lot like sisal and are soft underfoot.

Dash & Albert looks wonderful, but unfortunately is not in our budget. Wool sisal is most likely going to work, but because the area is a small urban house, we need a custom 7' X 7'. And yes the area is used daily.

Yeah totally understand, they are pricey for sure and sizes are limited. If i could suggest going for a darker color then. Not all wool is created equal, the cheaper wools don't clean up as well so a darker color will hide the love.

Sisal and jute are impossible to clean, I would opt for a 100% wool option with a similar feel.
