Is it possible to have no set style to a house exterior & interior?
Comments (10)personally I like a home that has a similar style on the inside as the outside, it just makes sense to me. In the past I thought building extensions should be similar in style as to the original, however after reading (and commenting on) Houzz posts I am now coming round to the idea of a modern extension on an older building. But having a kitchen and bathroom in different styles, that might just be to your taste and that is fine - there is nothing wrong with a building reflecting the personality of the owner!...See MoreHow will you style your home for autumn?
Comments (29)@Anne we are drawing to the end of our similar area renovations, I am looking forward to getting the furniture out of storage and thinking what stays and what goes.. it is exciting but exhausting as well we moved out for 4 weeks while structural stuff was done and have been back in for four with about 2 weeks to go, very tough living, my best friend has been a $29 target electric frypan, I am the creative gourmet of electric fry pan foods , good luck with your job, ours is finally looking like it has been worth it. The only bad trade we have had is the electrician and he is going to be here in half an hour I need to get dressed and be ready to have stern words with him...See MoreSix DIY Interior Design Tips to Style up the Perfect Room
Comments (11)Hi Luke Perhaps we could offer another viewpoint? Paul is right in that the professionals here have both experience and qualifications behind their comments and outlook. That doesn't mean only pro's can offer an opinion, however it does mean that the DIY homeowners aren't always aware of regulatory, structural or spatial reasons behind the way Pro's do things. Most of the DIY'er's here understand this and by and large the interaction between the Pro's and homeowners is respectful and educational to all. There will always be someone who becomes offended or catty about something but then that is just life.... That said, I can see Pauls point made across many posts. Some of the designs offered up by the DIY'ers are amazingly talented whilst others are amateur. Again, this is not life and death, however the issue appears to be the gradual 'us and them' attitude becoming prevalent in this forum. This is only an anonymous forum for the amateur DIY'er. The Pro's have their company names and reputations out there and give of their time and advice freely. As Paul says, it is what the forum needs in order to attract DIY'ers or people looking for advice. It is worth pointing out that there have been some BLATANTLY illegal things offered up here by DIY'ers as ways of going about works. Whilst that is a rarity, the fact remains that the Pro's have an understanding of the regulatory requirements and put more than our opinions on the line when working in this industry. There will always be dodgy tradies, just as there are many homeowners not paying their bills, gaming the system, performing illegal (and dangerous) works etc Paul consistently stands up for his industry and beliefs as a Pro. Some of the DIY'ers here would do well to consider that you don't gain the qualifications without time and hard work out in the real world. Whilst we respect everyone's right to contribute, respect is a two way street. Cheers...See MoreHelp! My new home has a boring bedroom.. How do I fix it?
Comments (17)Actually, your style isn't really very scandi in my opinion. It's industrial and rustic. I'd match recycled and chunky timbers with the concrete, a timber with rich reds. There is a company near me that makes plywood panels with recycled wood veneer attached. They're too far for you but might give you some ideas for a feature wall. I'd start with a few tins of paint and some colour actually. you'd be surprised what that can do! I'm fixing, well technically my second home but with our first we figured fairly quick it wasn't a forever home and didn't do anything personal with it. So this is our first "home" if not our first house. i getya! I know everyone seems to love white walls, but after years of bland rentals the first thing I wanted to do was paint colours all over the walls! Anything but white! Paint is cheap and a safe place to start testing your design flair. Go and paint a bunch of sample tins onto the walls and don't stress too much about the perfect look. start with what you like and find what suits that. A colour that makes you smile when you see it. I've paid about $10 a sample tin. like others said, don't do anything with the carpets yet, you can throw a rug over it if its too boring and it will look fine. There are so many things that I first thought I needed to completely change, then as I painted and freshened and tidied up I realised were not needed a huge reno. Our house was a bit of a wreck though, not a nice new apartment so things just literally needed cleaning and fixing. Put up some pictures, art, photos you like too. Honestly, I know everyone's being funny about getting a girlfriend and getting her to decorate, but actually I think it's great you've got your own taste and want to decorate. I think anyone you bring home would love seeing more of your personality around the place. Check out some garage sales and buyswap sell and auctions for rustic timber pieces for your home.
