Help!! I need ideas for a kitchen flooring problem...

I had a stainless steel kickboard removed during kitchen re-tiling. The living room floors are now being re-sanded. Because silicone was used to secure the kickboard the wood around the kitchen bench can't be sanded and re-sealed (silicone and sealant spread and repel each other potentially compromising the larger job).

The kickboard is old. The flooring can't be different because this is the change point between stumps and brickwork foundations. Kitchen renovation is a future project.

I need a temporary, replacement solution to cover the floors until then, or a way to renovate and secure the kickboard. Any ideas???
