What kind of siding did you use.

We're building a new 'old' farmhouse and I love the look of that siding, is it wood? Is it all new or is some new and some restored? Can you buy it directly from a manufacturer or was it custom? Partner wants HardiePlank but I don't think you can get that look in it.

That is good old fashion painted cedar clapboards 4" to the weather! Replaced wet rot with new wood and painted. Nothing beats the vintage look and feel of wood. If the wood is good quality and well protected it will last for many years. Did a project in Winchester and the home had the original painted cedar clapboards 8" to the weather as they say, and the boards were still in great shape. We did a small addition and were able to get the cedar milled up for that project but 4" to the weather should be more available. It was a shame to paint it but you could tell by looking at it that is going to last a long time. Clear heart vertical grain!. Best of luck on your Farmhouse!

I put metal siding on a house last year and the metal cost less than the vinyl would have. I wouldn't have thought that possible. The fabricator was local so no doubt that helped. It would be worthwhile to check into what's available to you locally. It will take time to research but it may pay off well.

The next time I decorate by a colour of the year will be the first time. Don't hold your breath. I have nothing against this particular colour but it doesn't work with all the things I've collected over the years, and I am not about to discard carpets bought after hard bargaining with dubious merchants in Istanbul or Islamabad because they don't "go" with a paint colour that someone voted "colour of the year." In its place, I think the colour would be quite nice (better than this years choices, certainly). It's just that my place isn't the right place for it.

The grey wall colour! This colour pallette from the deepest to the lightest has been on trend for a while now ... and it doesn't seem to matter what room of the house: it is becoming rather ho hum!! No proportion, balance, harmony with the elements in the room. Is this room a backpackers shared TV room?

Custom Orb looks great. But.....your flashings and trims can cost a lot of money and labour to finish well. If you use it in a few select areas that need little or no flashings then it works better. It becomes even more of a 'cool' feature then as well. Installing it vertical rather than horizontal could be much easier to install as well. We cladded our house in it about 7 years ago. While it looks great I probably wouldn't do it again due to the cost (and mucking around..) and also the fact that a change of colour isn't a paint brush away...... My preference would be FC sheet with battens over the joins, a bit of Custom Orb in a few selected areas that are hard to maintain/paint/etc and good old face brick. Recycled bricks rather than new would be a nice feature as well. Face brick needs little maintenance and doesn't damage easily from kids running into with bikes, etc..
