Comments (137)I see this is a very old thread , with lots of comments . I've just skim read them , but I haven't seen anyone suggest anything like my 'top-of-my-head' idea -- I love the wood , and the white contrast , but pretty boring . Whats your favourite colour , or what ties in with the other rooms ? It might be blue or red or yellow or orange or green , as examples . So paint the skirting board and around the door a pastel shade of your choice , and add a small 30cm x 30cm abstract painting featuring that colour as the primary dominant one , above ( or possibly below , or maybe even get 2 matching/complementary ones ) the control panel . One lighting crowd suggested glass shades -- I'd actually go for someothing large but wooden , in much the same shade as your floors and steps , with LED bulbs -- you can get some stunning ones around 80-100 cm in diameter ( sort of a star ball shape ) for $300-400 . I agree that I need to just live with the cost and finish the job properly, but your shortcut suggestions were all really interesting and much appreciated. Comments (13)siriuskey the grass trees are welded iron & wire, made by an artist who lives in our area, they are gorgeous and we don't have to worry about them dying! Yes you are right, the verandah is coming away from the wall, which is where the little birds nest ;) I love the last picture you posted and its the look we want. Interesting that all your images show grey/galv roof, which is what we want (not red). Mel N yes the cost is due to lack of tradies in the area so we have to add on travel, accommodation, meals. Also quote does not include removal of old iron & timber from site so we have to factor in dump fees. We could dispose of the timber battens easily enough, everyone needs firewood here, it's the iron that's expensive to dump. big reader yes she is a treasure, we love her. tessaway the house has plenty of light in the front rooms, it's very bright here, almost every day is sunny. We would just like to see the full height of the windows from the front garden. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI don't live in an apartment, but still don't want to store too much. A glass bowl of baubles, a vase of fresh greenery or holly if it's available with red berries. I live where it's hot and the wrong season for berries, so would use faux berries. Like this lantern idea too. You could change your colour scheme to suit your taste though. Merry Christmas!

6 years agoChristmas trees and all the associated decorations take up a lot of space, so when I wanted to decorate my dad's room in his nursing home, I got a wall sticker Xmas tree. It was a great hit with all the residents and staff and took up no room at all, other than a bit of wall space. There are a number of companies that sell them, with many different designs, so if this interests you, you should be able to get something that suits your taste and decor. Below is a picture of the one I got.

6 years agoOver the years I have improvised Christmas trees depending on our circumstances. When we were living in the middle of renovations a surveyor's tripod became a quite respectable tree. Later, in a small apartment, a few evergreen twigs hung on the wall in the form of a tree worked fine. The next year we had an ornamental bamboo in that same spot so that became the tree.
