We’re planning to finish renovating/tarting up our current 2 storey house so we can sell it & build a brand new schmick dream house that we can just move into, relax & enjoy :) The older house we are in now is a 5 bed, 2 bath house that needs work to the internal stairs, 2nd bathroom downstairs finished, install a new laundry, finish the last bedroom downstairs, replace the roof with new roof sheets, paint the rear deck, a pantry for the kitchen, the entry way needs a lot of work, replace 2 worn out old seized roller doors, paint the entire front of the house to lift the facade & street appeal... fix up the front carport, front bedroom awnings & do something amazing to the front deck lol.... not to mention the pussy palace outside haha! Yes, we built a pet palace for my 2 old pussy cats - it’s the only thing we won’t be renovating lol :) Given chronic health issues for me & our son that blew up after we bought the house, our beloved ‘fixer upper’ has badly restricted our quality of life & I struggle to navigate our stairs.... I can not express, how much - the simple joy of being in a low set house - where my young son & I can actually get outside & get grass under our feet! I can sometimes go a week before I make it downstairs , let alone outside so I miss walking on grass - it’s the simple pleasures :) so - we’re working on ‘quality of life’ for 2018... for not just my son & I, but my daughter & rock of a husband too... oh ... and the residents of our pussy palace & our hero woofa, Evie :)
Our plan is to have some additional joinery in kitchen, living and family rooms. For the kitchen, a large tall glass-fronted cabinet/hutch to match existing cabinets so we can display/store crystal and china, which is still boxed up in garage. I'm tossing up whether to match the bench to the stone in kitchen or have it made with spotted gum. Want it to look more like a piece of furniture.
Also, some additional long low floating shelving units in kitchen and family room, and next to the brick fireplace in living room a floating shelving unit (incl a spotted gum bench to serve as an occasional bar).
We tried to get this work done last year, but all our local cabinetmakers were busy with new house builds and showed no interest whatsoever, so I am looking into the work being done by a couple of bespoke furniture makers new to our regional area.
Plenty of work ahead to keep you busy. Like your floating shelf idea. Can be a more economical, less restrictive and striking visual. Here's a wall in my dining room where I used a floating shelf, just from Ikea as an art display shelf and to act as micro buffet without taking up too much space, with a featured canvas 1000 x 800 of a photo of a Gorge I took up at Karajini National Park in WA's Pilbara a few years back. All the art pieces on the shelf are from local Australian artists.
That looks great, Paul. Gorgeous art! We love collecting handmade pieces by craftsman on our travels as well. Thanks for the floating shelf suggestion.
