Red brick dilemma
Comments (14)I think the house could look really good either way. With a big enough budget and if you are up for dealing with possible quality problems and ongoing maintenance then changing the colour and making other updates could completely modernise the facade. But keeping the red brick could look better too. I lived in a red brick house and hated it but after seeing so many nice red brick houses I have come to realise what a huge difference the colour of the trims and the landscaping makes to such a distinctive colour. That front window is really prominent so it's important to get the window colour right. I like georgi02's suggestion of new double-glazed windows. I think there is more value in improvements with a practical benefit so you have the opportunity to do that. The patio and stair tiling looks neither matching nor contrasting so perhaps look at that. Lots of dense green foliage contrasts well with red brick so landscaping could make the red bricks a real feature....See More1960 s conventional home needing TLC
Comments (19)as usual Julie you find the best images for inspiration and Dan asked who likes the grey roof but i wouldn't paint the roof unless the tiles are needing to be repointed and gutters replaced and then grey roof with white fascia and black or white windows, verandah posts and black gutters..just like Julies' suggestion...See MorePainting our red brick house, terracotta roof. Comments (17)(echoing others here) No, no, no NO! ............The issue isn't the brickwork nor the roof tiles.....rather it's the currently multicoloured trim of say your guttering, garage and windows etc... I'd also argue that the idea of the "award winning" example posted above, will most likely date in time.......although I like the landscaping aspect of that one - but otherwise it's too heavy tonally for my eye and the rear extension is a harsh juxtaposition formally........anyway,I digress.... On your home here I reckon you best to work within the inherent style rather than try and force it into something that it is not. Other things, some not that expensive, will go a long way here, for example, bring the trim colours into consistency, consider relocating the downpipe on the far left brick column, and focus on a proper front landscaping design (including removing the concrete aspect) and de-cluttering the verandah will also make a world of difference. Looks like you have a beautiful established (jacaranda) tree in your front yard - perhaps make that that the "hero" of your frontage / streetscape That's what I did on this project, whilst completely different style the point is it was more about the garden - the house and structure becomes supporting and complimentary to the external landscaped spaces Good luck! Comments (4)We are all different -- I definitely wouldn't rave about the bathroom 'before' , but the after is so so so generic it could be a laboratory somewhere -- exactly zero personality . I imagine that fair end bathroom wall as a feature , in a burnt orange or burgundy red , or even in those same blue tiles , with random pink and grey ones , as a nod to the past . And why have black soap pumps , but stainless tapware ? I'm sure 95% of Houzzers could have done way better . The rest is more open , its had $$$ spent , but every single area lacks something IMO . The lounge is the only area that I commend , apart from having a mirror directly opposite what I assume is the TV ( I did originally wonder if it was an art piece , but at that height in that position , that wouldn't make much sense either ) ....See MoreWild Bear & Co Hervey Bay
