Using interior door as a front door

Hi,

I have recently purchased an old interior door (liked the moldings and frosted glass in it) and was wondering if I could use it as an exterior door? I am renovating an old house but it has a plain wooden front door, this new one is more fitting with the age and design of the house. Is it possible to use it? I am planning on having a new security flyscreen installed, so I'm not concerned about security. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

if the door is solid wood (you can usually tell because it will be very heavy) and the putty and or timber mouldings supporting the glass is carefully repaired and the hinges and door handles are replaces and sealed all around and the door is painted on all SIX sides with a good quality paint/varnish it should be OK but no door will withstand the full blast of hot sun and rain so hope there is a porch or wide eaves for protection...a light weight hollow door will probably only last long enough to save up for a new door, so hope the retro door works for you...btw make sure the door is resized and installed to suit all the extra coats of paint and have the security door made last as old style door thicknesses can affect the installation requirements and costs of the security door

Thanks oklouise. I have a large verandah around the front of the house so the door should never see any sunlight or rain. Will make sure I cover all the points you've stated when I get it installed.

we usually paint doors so that when the door is open and you approach the doorway, you will see the same color as the door, So, the hinge side of a front door would be painted the exterior door color and the knob side would be painted the interior color. I would probably paint the inside of the door the same as the trim color of the room or leave stained if the woodwork is unpainted.

That's great advice re the colours Design Organisation, I've been trying to work out how to choose the right greys to create the same effect as the one in your photo (still looking for a door like it!) Unfortunately budget doesn't extend to replacing the gutters which are that very 80s primrose. I've spoken to builder re your suggestion about the width of the poles and we might now replace them with timber posts, you've been really helpful!

Hi Nick, I think you should retain the existing door and paint it in the colour that is used for the existing highlight colour, this will tie in nicely with the existing windows and the screen door. I think the door you have selected is a very nice door, but it won't be seen behind the screen anyway. You could also swap your pots on the verandah over to a gloss black and put in a plant with a nice bright flower (red or white bloom) for a splash of colour. Side lights for sure and a straight door like To find and design pictured but I'd use clear glass, because the door is recessed which creates the privacy. Paint it white and at the same time paint the balustrade white to feature it again as was the idea when it was designed and return the front patio to red which I guess would be the original colour. Changing these great houses from original and think they look better is like getting an original XP falcon and putting a spoiler on the back because a spoiler looks good on a Porsche.
