I love hardwood spotted gum floors, they add so much warmth to a space. I'm trying to visualise your space, but I'd be inclined to go for a light shade, maybe a light pebble grey to complement your walls, and add texture with a charcoal suite. Good luck!

This is the room in question the furniture will be replaced with a creamy white suite but the carpet will also go when the new furniture arrives

I love Julie and Big reader's comments. I would change the window treatment to soft colourful curtaining and incorporate the suggestions already made. I like your coffee table and tv unit together btw. And a nice bit of artwork could pick up the curtain colour.

I'd avoid a light overall colour - we inherited a fairly new pure wool in a light beige and it's a nightmare to keep looking good. I'd give anything for my old house's slightly mottled berber, but I'm not sure that would suit the style of your house/room. I'd go for something that you like and which would go well with the type and colours of your bed linen. Don't go too dark either - I also lived with dark grey in a bedroom and it showed every minute light fluff from clothing (not to mention the white underbelly fur of the cat we acquired.)
