Need help with our kitchen layout
Comments (11)From what I can see, I agree with the others. This seems like a pretty good layout and if it's working for you, I don't see any reason to change it. The only thing I could see adding is a prep. sink by the window. My kitchen sink looks out over our patio/pool and I have to admit, it's really convenient to reach through the window and dump out a drink, or use the sink. That being said, we don't have a bar ledge, but instead have a counter-height patio table, which seems to work better. Instead of passing food through, and then walking around. I leave it on the counter, walk around, slide open the window, and grab it. The pass through is for just that, but when we're sitting outside, everyone has their back to the kitchen window and facing the pool, or watching the "Grill Master". Most of the homes around my area have ledges, but I have found that it's more, in the way, than useful, since we have to reach over the ledge and through the window, making the interior counters and sink, harder to access. The pass through window is actually 4' tall sliding doors. The benefit is that the window sil is completely flush, with the counter and pass through area, and both sashes, are moveable. As for your interior, the only think I might change, depending on what's on the other side, is instead of having the breakfast bar as it is, I would eliminate it and put one large island, with the cook top, that extends all the way to where the breakfast bar is now. The bar stools would wrap around the end, and one side, making for better conversation, as well....See MoreNeed help with our entrance - hardly any wall space
Comments (32)What about one or two artistic small shelves in a darker wood or painted a colour in your rug? I can't find what I'm looking for, but basically a sculptural shelf or it could br a collection of small boxes together with some beautiful little artworks or collection pieces inside. You could also add a drawers or some hooks (stylishly!) to the bottom so you can hang your keys or throw your bits and pieces in the drawer. It would be the artwork and be practical too without taking up floorspace. Light it up too!...See MoreI need help with a blank wall/space in our kitchen area!
Comments (23)clintandvic - are you very minimalist, private people? a lot of the solutions above seem very impersonal - and, while your current artwork might have special meaning for you, it could be found anywhere. I'd go for either the round or cheaper 'floating'-style bookshelves. I definitely wouldn't have a mirror backing for anything on which you are likely to put books (or heavy decorator items such as vases) - too easy to accidentally break the mirror! (I'd be filling the bookshelves here with cookbooks - but that's me), but it seems you don't really envisage books on the shelves? But most of all . . . this is your home, and it seems to be the corner of the kitchen, so close to the heart of your home? Even if you go with the shelves, don't fill them with this season's trendy decorator items - save the space for meaningful objects from your life together! Frame and display all sorts of personal items (not just photos - though I am also a fan of the idea of making it a photo wall): festival or sporting event tickets, maybe framed with a very small poster (you can even find and printout original ads for events from the internet); that crafty thing you bought when you were both away for a weekend . . . don't be afraid to make this space about you, rather than what you think it should look like - and it will make a great talking point to share with guests . . . How much more interesting would this wall look if it featured framed clothes from your wedding/the day you met/your favourite holiday together? Comments (12)not a professional just obsessed with building and renovating..bagging the fireplace wall would make it easy to fill in the old master bedroom doorway with bricks to make a seamless match for the whole wall and brighten the whole new room and a simple roof extension on legs at right angles to the house with a gable roof, simple steel framed construction with Colorbond and lazerlite roofing and raked ceilings would make an ideal alfresco but you would probably need a skylight in the new kitchen to keep indoors from being too dark (and/or check out Solar Skylights that are excellent for adding extra light without holes in the roof) ...the alfresco could have basic concrete slab extended out from the existing verandah, screen walls, outdoor fireplace and outdoor barbq kitchen and sink..we've done something similar in a previous reno using a custom sized steel carport supplied by a local garage maker and then adding screen walls with lazerlite, lattice and plastic cafe blinds subject to views and direction of the weather ... you should also consider bug screening using horticultural shade cloth as you may find rural living a bit more fly blown than the suburbs and the screened room makes a safe play area for small kids and for pets left home alone btw don't forget to check the measurements of all the rooms as there are some discrepancies that need to be corrected in the plans and would be happy to redraw with correct measurements...See Morejuliahocking
