Bathroom layout for new build - Please help!
Hi All,
This is my first time building a new home and also on this forum.
I'm stuck on the best bathroom layout. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Currently drawn by the builder per below, but I'm open to change.
What do you think?
I have four boys, so shower needs to be a good size!
Freestanding bath or inset.... flexible here.
There is a linen cupboard opposite the powder room, so clean towels etc. can be stored there, however perhaps vanity should be larger?
What are your thoughts on door placement.... door could move up towards the current vanity wall? Which way should the door open?
Window can move/resize if required too.
Any thoughts most welcome :o)

6 years agoWith four boys I would go for practicality and easy cleaning over style. A few suggestions:
1) Increase the number of towel rails, so each boy has their own towel rail.
2) Inset bath in a bath hob is the only way to go. Freestanding ones are difficult to clean behind unless you have lots more room
3) Consider extending the vanity bench and incorporate a large dirty linen drawer with a removable linen basket to collect dirty clothes.
Custom Craftsman Style Home · More Info4) Extend the window the full length of the room so you get more natural light above the vanity, but with a high sill of 1500mm to minimise the chance of moisture damage to the timber.
5) The door swing is correct, but I would move it slightly away from the vanity while still allowing a towel rail behind it.
6) I would not have the wall adjacent to the shower full height as it divides up the room too much. Go for showerscreen height, or a dwarf wall with glazed screen on top.
7) Think about good lighting and ventilation. I have designd a few kids bathrooms where the light switch is combined with the fan. Whenever the light is turned on the exhaust fan turns on which reduces the chance of mould.
8) A big vanity basin combined with wall mounted taps and spouts above the vanity will reduce cleaning.
9) Even though I wouldn't put it in my own home I have had a few client requests to include a single urinal in a boys-only bathroom!

The front door to the house is bottom left corner of the drawing and will swing against the Master Bedroom wall where it is thickest otherwise the door will swing into the lounge room so we'll have to get creative with the Master Bedroom sliding door location. Attached for reference. Gallifrey The ghosted wall you mentioned is the original wall before the renovation. It will be taken down so there won't be any wall in the bedroom, we were hoping to have an open plan Master Bedroom and Ensuite. LesleyH Good point, we'd love a nice large shower. Comments (18)I have decided that it is a bit extravagant for me to have two bathrooms in my little house based on the small amount of times the second bathroom will be used. I am still wanting to have a laundry cupboard that has the washing machine and dryer in it (and maybe some storage or bench space for sorting????), but where the top bathroom was, I am just going to have a walk in robe off the bedroom to the right. It will have a cavity sliding door into the walk in robe. The walls go to 2700mm. To enable the shower to have a width of 900mm in the lower bathroom, the doorway is now going to be moved so that the entry to the bathroom is via a door to the far right. The toilet will now be in between the shower and vanity, so that the toilet isnt the first thing you see when you walk into the bathroom. Can anyone see any issues with the changed design, and can you suggest how to design the walk in robe and the laundry cupboard to maximise storage and function. Should I now make the the bathroom deeper and the walk in robe narrower? Should I make the laundry cupboard wider? PS. Comments (20)@oklouise thanks for measurement suggestions, good starting point with so many choices available. About the bath, we thought just a freestanding, or back to wall bath, would take less space compared to drop in bath. But it something worth considering with the suggested layout. Also, the bathroom entry door would be sliding cavity if that helps. @differentways thanks for a suggestion that we haven't really thought about. We have considered a smaller Japanese style deep bath, but obviously this would not be practical for kids. Just to make sure I understand your concept, you are suggesting a purpose built bath which will be about 2570mm (including the ledge), husband thinks this is very generous :). My husband and I can't find a photo of something similar, do you have a link? Are you suggesting the sides of the bath to be a lower height compared to standard bath? I like the idea of a ledge, would definitely make bathing kids easier. About the position of the ensuite, do you mean placing it outside the bedroom area so it can be accessed by others? We have discussed this, still part of ongoing discussion. If need to we just have to move the bedroom entrance door. I have attached a google earth view....See More

6 years agoHi rhyzar, I've drawn up a quick sketch of my initial thoughts. I have taken vanity out of toilet room and put separately. This vanity can than be used as an extra for brushing teeth etc. I have put a high long window above vanity in bathroom, with mirror below. Nice big shower , vanity in the middle , then bath. The end of shower near entrance door could have obscured glass for privacy.

6 years agoThis is a three way bathroom, separate Toilet,Shower and Bath with vanity, plenty of room for towels this layout also includes a linen cupboard cheers

5 years agoHi, have located a photo of what I was thinking for your boys bathroom. Regarding the vanity outside toilet, you could install a feature sliding or cavity door, to be used when required.

5 years agoHi ryzar, Ok's layout is a good three way. My suggestion is that seeing you are planning on having a bath in the ensuite you don't need a second in this bathroom.
I would remove the bath and make the shower/bathroom space into 4 shower cubicles 900 x 1m approx, 2 on each side, like you would find in a locker room, you don't even need to have the dividers but I think it's better, the shower's can still come off the wall or not, I wouldn't have those lights but have 4 down lights over each shower cubicle. I don't know what ages your boys are but they will get bigger very quickly I'am sure they will find this fun cheers

5 years agoI have redrawn this idea taking from your ensuite,
2 x double showers as per your ensuite. additional vanity for brushing teeth shaving, towel rail below and one wall of WC.
Hand basin in WC for hands and teeth, just saying as you have 4 sons.
The double wall hung vanity has mirrored shaving cabinets above, any wall space can be used for towels.
This bathroom can be used by all ages having easy access, and a fun experience for multiple persons. cheers.

Replace 1 x double shower with 1 x bath. Could a corner bath work??Remove vanity in shower/bath room for towel rails
Hinged door to bathroom, which gives space behind door for hooks. Actually as I'm typing this, just thinking if hinged door will get in the way of a shower mat...
I would prefer a hinged door on toilet too, however I think for space a cavity slider will need to be the go.

5 years agoHi rhyzar, Toilet now has door but you would lose the small hand basin which isnt a problem but possibly another spot to brush teeth, bath with shower over and double shower, linen cupboard that can take dirty and clean linen/towels. An plenty of places to hang towels.
I wouldn't go for a corner bath as they take up too much floor space, I also think the straight lines balance things better. We're getting back to Oklouise floor plan with a couple of small changes.

5 years agorhyzar perhaps send through a larger floor plan please so this all can be understood/analysed in context? how far along is the project? Good ideas here however it's assuming capacity for changing/taking over passage/access to what appears to be leading down another passage at the top of the page? Or am I missing something? Another way to do this without completely taking over passage space is to flip the powder over to the external wall which would enable natural light into it. I'd also vote for a double basin set-up. Attached sketch of this option/idea if space is restricted - dashed line shows walls of the plan you sent
