I don't think you need anything. Negative space can be good. Your problem is that your light fitting is low and large and it will obstruct any view of large artwork. You also need to make sure that anything that hangs is above head height so it is not accidently knocked when somebody walks down the stairs. Consider switching your pendant to something like an Ikea PS Maskros pendant which makes flower patterns on your stair well walls, and looks fantastic as a feature in a stairwell like yours. https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/40147463/ Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls

Hi Paul, I hear your collective frustration! my comment about light bouncing into your eyes was in response to your question about bouncing light onto your faces from a light placed behind the vanity (from memory). Have you seen Dr Renos comment here - still the most logical response to me. https://www.houzz.com.au/discussions/5148857/where-to-place-power-points-and-lights#n=5 So I'm going to go for side lights next to the vanity cabinet. Trouble is, my vanity is off-centre to the cabinet mirror, so I still have to sort that one out. Time spent really considering this is well worth it. I think LED downlights may very well cast shadows, sorry to say :-) and the next consideration is what colour temperature - warm white or daylight? For relaxing ambience (75% bathroom function) it will def be 3000 warm white for me, however for the vanity functions it will be 4000K (daylight) so I will probably get the vanity lights switched separately to the main room light, maybe put that on a dimmer... I know there are some LED bulbs available that enable the colour temp to be changed within the same bulb...

Pottsy99 thank you. You're right there is a lot going on here and i'm really in the early stages of the design - as a non professional designer - with poor spelling :-). I've considered replacing the front tiles with colourbond to create a consistent theme but it's more likely i'll need to do that down the track given budget constraints. With that, i'll toy with the pitch and I agree that it will look more proportioned on a lower pitch (12.5-15 or so). Oklouise thankyou for your idea and drawing. It's really generous of you to take the time. I understand what you mean. You're right that the current house is on stumps and the extension will be a slab. I think your idea about creating a 'bridge' of sorts to link the extension has some legs. Almost like a pavilion. So i'll keep working on that and post updates. Thanks everyone, cheers Andrew.

Thank you for your responses. Both areas are separated by a bulk head in the kitchen with the kitchen light a bit hidden by it. The dilema is that the dinning have traditional beige courtains with rectangular palmets and there is nothing black on it should i choose something that matches the color of the kitchen which is predominately black and beige or  something that matches the colours of dining wich are beige with the same colour of the wood as the shutters in the kitchen ( honey colur).
