I'll have the same dilemma when I eventually move. The first thing that I will be doing is buying some large, neutral coloured rugs, probably jute or sisal (or similar), to help juxtapose the light timber floors with the dark timber furniture. I think having a "break" between the two timber styles/colours is a good idea. I'll personally be aiming for some kind of combined Japanese and Scandinavian interior design. Hi anzella, loving the new table and chairs, because you live in North QLD I wouldn't worry about a rug under the table, apart from you climate I find rugs under tables can become very annoying . If however you do decide to have one down the track, Sisal Rugs are great for your climate, you can even make your own to whatever size by buying the sisal and edging it yourself or getting a carpet place to overlock the edges. I think it depends on the size of your household and how many people sit down to dine. Do you have family and friends for dinner? The current round table looks like it can seat 4 people comfortably, but six people may be a bit cosy. If you need a table for more than four people then I would go rectangular. You could always compromise with an oval table? An oval table doesn't need to align with anything, so it can be angled to make the most of the space without looking crooked.
