Comments (19)I definitely agree that once you live in a home for a few months you will have a good idea of what works and what doesn't. Assuming that the large room with the floorboards is the living space and the room with the slate is the family room, would it work if you knocked out the wall between the kitchen and the family room, rather than just having a pass-through? You could then leave the fireplace wall alone and put a bank of fridge, pantry and wall oven(s) on the kitchen side. You can have a large return (peninsular) between the side walls. This way you have a very open view into the family room where your children will probably spend a lot of time and you get to keep the fireplace or some version of it. If the rooms will not be used in this way, you would be better to remove the fireplace and the wall - but only if you can find another wall in the kitchen to relocate the fridge, etc. From a design perspective, while the kitchen is dated the timber can be painted and new knobs or handles added. You can have the benchtop resurfaced and a new splashback possibly installed over the existing one. However new kitchens would have more drawers than doors. If there was detailing on these it is more commonly a very simple Shaker profile that suits the very popular Hamptons style. Otherwise they are plain with shadowline or push to open. My advice would be to live with it for a while and then as soon as your budget allows get a new kitchen as part of the bigger renovation....See MoreKitchen Design Help - U shaped kitchen
Comments (3)I really like the design put forward by oklouise, it really allows you to hind the ugly stuff pls all the countertop appliances like toasters. An alternative is to move the stove to the exterior wall where the current pantry is, this would reduce the space from the stove to the sink. move the fridge towards the exterior wall and add built in pantry either side of the fridge to frame the fridge. add uppers between the pantry and the exterior wall with an appliance garage below. alternatively, keep your current design, add uppers to the exterior pantry wall, and add an appliance garage below to hide the toaster and stuff. Good luck!...See MoreKitchen design help - IKEA kitchen
Comments (19)Kate - Whilst I appreciate moving the door would be a great idea, it joins up to our laundry and the door is directly across from the laundry external door that leads to the side garden. I will take photos to show what I mean. Juliahocking - thank you for your suggestions. I am inspired by adding in cupboards/pantry on the opposite wall. Regarding flipping the kitchen 45 degrees, I have added measurements to clarify the space, and if I understand you correctly, there isn't enough room to flip the u-shape (although it is a great idea). I have added another (old) picture that shows the entry door, and next to the entry door is a sideboard/side shelf - this is where our butchers block/island is situated - so gives you an idea of the limited space. Old photo: Entrance door on the left. Next to the door is where the butchers block sits, underneath that painting....See MoreKitchen design help Please
Comments (25)I keep coming back to this plan. If it was drawn up by a professional they need to give the money back. EG There looks to be about 50cm between the shelving in Bed2 so I hope the child using that room is small and stays small. The double front door is shown with the hinges in the middle giving two adjacent doors not a double opening. Most of the doors are jammed in on the plan and the doorknobs will go through the walls. The main bathroom layout wastes space with the shower being big standard when for minimum cost, it could be 1200 and way nicer to use. The roof line is a mess. Apart from the issues others have raised. If the Poster didn’t have pics in their lookbook I’d think this was a homework question....See MoreUser
