Comments (20)@baretta11...you made me laugh heaps! You sound down to earth and no fuss...I like that. My walls are all natural timber, curtains cream, some pink in the bedroom and bathroom with pressed metal rather than subways...a bit older style but painted pale shell pink. Yes real hardwood rable, decent sized cooktop...I imagined the tomato sauce but could not imagine these young people even cooking that! Decent 6ft 1924 bathtub all reglazed...the whole bathroom is reminiscent of the inside of a shell...used to live in the islands so a few shells for decoration... "Old Fashioned" never dates! THE BLOCK will date very quickly and even become non finctional....but there's the money so let them play. The wooden bathtub got me...couldn't wait to see if it had been made from a solid lump of wood...but Oh No...the bottom is glued.....one day the people below will have a shower where they don't expect! Then how will that be fixed and who will foot the expense? No thanks! "Grandma Chic" is a big joke for me too. My Grandma was always classical and simple and always looked lovely..."Little Old Lady passing by...". At least what 'we old fashioned ones prefer is founded on substance, substance lasts a lifetime and then some. Some places are dateless as are some dress fashions. All this renovating and decorating is fun to watch...even thechildish antics and the bare faced lies...don't know how they do it, I'd be out of the game very quickly! Looks stunning but wonder what it will look like, say, in about 12 months...and I don't think God would be at all prompted to save them from some of the folley.....but it seems to be a temporary world with temporary fittings....I'd rather live in the past in my solid old house that nothing has managed to destroy in 94 years...it will outlast me...and then some developer will come with paper and glue and put up a block of temporary units....Reminds me me of the three little pigs somehow...or the Cheshire Cat and Alice.. .."Which way should I go from from here? asked Alice. Comments (17)Hi there, Without seeing the entire layout, it is hard to recommend what to do. Here are some ideas which could help! - wall mount tv with swivel arm and tilt to allow a better angle with out ruining the symmetry it creates above the fireplace. -cables can be cover with conduit -curtains can stay but extended to reach the fire place to create the illusion of a larger space. -foxtel (or dvd unit etc) can then be tucked behind curtains where extended curtain is vertically the save space and remove clutter i just finished a project where i did something similar. i will try and take a photo as an example. lavada...See MoreUrgent help with street appeal!
Comments (19)I wouldn't replace the fibre cement panels under the windows with weatherboards, that would just accentuate the different window heights. Instead I would paint those panels a darker colour, say a charcoal grey, with the corner posts and other window trim in the same colour. (You are right, grey is timeless, while any blue would date very quickly.) Then the windows and panels become consistent vertical elements on a lighter facade. You can also pick out the fascias and gutters in that same grey to tie it all together. If you stripped back the brown painted battens to the undercroft and the balcony timber railings, and instead gave them a coat of decking oil for natural timber warmth and integrity, you could make a similar oiled horizontal batten front fence using hardwood decking boards on 50x50 galvanised steel posts. Then the fence and the undercroft battening would match. If the garage door is a tilt-a-door I would be tempted to replace the steel with oiled horizontal battens. Otherwise, paint it the same charcoal grey. Then you have a 3-tone colour scheme that will give the place simple understated elegance: White, grey, and natural oiled hardwood. I am curious why what looks like the front door is not accessible? It looks like there might have been front steps there at one time instead of the current deck. 5 years agoMost of the big paint companies have technical advice enquiry phone lines, but I would have thought that the joining compound should have an undercoat. You certainly don't want any patchiness on the final coats. Will your painter guarantee a perfect finish over the parts that have no undercoat with only two coats? Lots of houses get painted before the lights are installed, so it sounds like a snow job. Don't pay him until you are happy. He may have to come back to apply a third coat if the finish is not up to standard!
Most floor sanders today use various vacuum techniques to minimise wood dust covering everything but they are not 100% perfect and some fine dust always seems to escape. Sometimes the smaller snaders that they use for detail work, like edges, make dust. I would postpone your floor sander so that the painter is not rushing the job, and taking short cuts.
