Thank you all for your timely responses. I too have always enjoyed the convenience of my two ovens which can be used independently of each other, which is why I am seriously considering the 1.5 double oven option. I have also researched the idea of two compact ovens which include microwave and steam options, (Bosch, Miele, Smeg AEG etc) and was all excited about that idea, but to install two of these is far too expensive. ($5000+ minimum) The freestanding convection microwave options all stipulate minimum 10-20cm airflow at the top of the unit, and the ones that do come with trim kits still all end up being too large for the space...frustratingly, often by only 2 or 3 cm! And yes, I've also lusted after an induction cooktop, but the expense of chasing wiring down a solid brick wall and disrupting backsplash tiling has put the kybosh on that idea. Anyhow, I have slept on this (again!) and have come to the conclusion that a 1.5 oven without an integrated microwave is the only way available at a reasonable cost.... A small microwave inside a cupboard might just work.... It's both interesting and noteworthy that convection/microwave +/- steam, with regular multifunction oven combinations although expensive, are readily available in several brands in the US......I'm jealous!

how2girl is right, ducted is better. Ducted extracts better and with less maintenance. But it might be difficult or impossible to do, for example in a two storey house with the kitchen in the middle so that there is nowhere for the ducting to go. suzineedsahouse is right, different people have different requirements and what is important for one person might not be important for another person. I have seen a house where a window beside the cooktop was enough for the owner (I did wonder how that works on windy or rainy days). Some people are happy enough with a non-ducted rangehood. Some people insist on a ducted rangehood and are willing to rearrange their houseplan if necessary to ensure they have space to install one. I have heard of people who have chosen commercial rangehoods for their home. I know of people who have a second kitchen outside in their alfresco area which they prefer to use for some of their cooking and sometimes even those have a ducted rangehood. (Btw as far as I know a gas cooktop only affects your choice in regards to how high above the cooktop the rangehood must be.)

I spent ages figuring out the lay out of our kitchen and am really happy with the result (four months in). We put the sink on the back wall, under a window and love looking out. Make sure there is a bin drawer next to the sink. Ours goes bin, sink, dishwasher, drawers, stove, drawers, oven stack. I think the passages in your kitchen area are a bit narrow. We have 1300mm between the benchtop edges. People can then pass each other easily and it doesn't matter if the drawers or dishwasher is open. The island then has drawers holding the plates and cutlery. You can unload the dishwasher straight into the opposite drawers which the kids love. You have two lots of corner cupboards in the pantry and might be better off with one straight line as I don't believe you gain much more and it will feel more spacious. Consider leaving a space on the kitchen side of the island so you can sit too. I hate standing while entertaining and everyone else is sitting at the island! Hope that helps.

HI Check out Whispair. We have one installed and short of it being on full blast you cannot hear it, even though the motor is within the unit. If you want a remote unit you have to make sure the ducting is done right, but the Schwiegen is very quiet. Cheers
