Laying them horizontally across the room will make the room look larger. This is definitely the case with ours!

Some of the latest timber look tiles are very realistic & I've used them on a clients outside patio -but, they still have the cold feel of tile- inside I'd look for one of the tough new engineered hardwood floors.

we would wish to have timber-look tiles that we could use for both indoors and outdoors in order to have a flow-through impression. Could anyone recommend a specific brand or model which would be suitable for this ? many thanks

Hopefully the rating, as explained below, should be on the code on each tile. Make sure they are vitrified as well so colour is all the way through. This way a scratch wjll not be white.
