I'd go with his choice, because even if it wasn't 'my' style, I'd rather feel like he's taking an interest and equally invested in our home together. Plus, if I'm being completely honest, I think his taste is probably better than mine. ;) He rarely has an opinion on anything house-related, so when he puts his foot down, I go along with it: and on each occasion, it's been exactly the right decision. Example: I wanted the whole house painted out in ecru and antique white because it looks awesome with oak floors and I'm kind of a minimalist. Hubby insisted on painting the lounge room in yellow. YELLOW. I thought he'd lost his mind... but I went with it, because I get my way 99.9% of the time, so why quibble about the 0.1%? He insisted that 'in Winter, you'll be glad we have this warm, cozy colour'. And you know what? Every Winter, I love that room. It's an odd duck compared to the rest of the house, but damned if it doesn't actually work surprisingly well. It'd definitely be too much to take as a house-wide theme - but contained as it is, it's pretty great.

I can't really give any advice on buying over the internet - never done it, and probably wouldn't have even if it had been available in the days I was in art-buying mode. (Now, I'm at the stage where, if something comes in, something has to go, so I don't do as much fossicking around as I used to). The point is, I like to see what it is I'm buying, face to face, so to speak. I've bought most of the art now adorning my walls (and it's pretty eclectic) from street vendors and "starving artists" markets and from small regional art shows. It's always worth having a look at local exhibits and galleries outside the big centers. You never know what you can find, and what might appeal to you. My tastes are bit eclectic, so I've also been known to buy old prints and lithographs and have them framed. Also, like Georgi, I have a lot of "non-art" things on my wall, including big copper trays from Turkey, a relief from an Indian temple door, ceramic plates picked up in Italy and Austria, a Haida wood carving from my native BC, and a woven wall hanging of a village with pigs going to market from Lesotho. As I said, eclectic. I'm a firm believer that art should be more than an item of decor, and should have meaning to the owner, whether it's something you especially like or something that has memories attached to it. I don't believe in buying things just to fill a blank space on a wall. Leave the spot bare until you find something that really speaks to you.

Jeffrey, you want to bring a more neutral palette into your accessories to complement the busy-ness of your carpet and the darkness of the sofa. Look for textured fabrics in neutral tones, such as hide, wool, linen - but make sure they tone in with the brown sofa. The two side lamps are out of balance where they are as they're swamping the media centre with their dominance! If you're looking for a suitable lamp (just one) to place next to the TV, then opt for a more elongated and slim-line one, with some height. I agree with allanaspree (above) that the lamps would be better suited on either side of the sofa, allowing for nicer ambience in the room. I'm not sure what's situated behind the two chairs, but you could try to swing the lounge room around by moving the media centre and TV to the wall currently occupied by the sofa. Place your sofa and mirror into that vacated spot, and put your side tables and lamps on either side of the sofa. The mirror will reflect the whole room in its entirety, and not just some random open doors behind your chairs! TV viewing will be easier for all with this plan. Moving the media centre will give you a few more options to dress the wall. Just be mindful that less is more on that wall, as it will be competing for attention with the AC. A striking piece of artwork on the RHS of the TV will draw the eyes away from the AC to the left and above. If you do opt to move the TV to this wall, I would not recommend placing any artwork above the television! Not only would it be too busy, but it would compete with the AC and the telly. An assymetrical approach to dressing your wall will give a more visual balance to it. The only other thing I'd recommend would be that you raise the curtains to ceiling height. At the moment, their lowered height is giving the AC prominence on that wall! You want to draw the eyes away from the unit. If your budget can stretch to it, I'd draw inspiration from the brass elements in your accessories, and replace the white curtain pole with a brass one. It's always about BALANCE! Hi. Yes, me too, number 3! Some really beautiful pieces of art being suggested. Wow, such vibrant colours. May I make a suggestion? Maybe it's just me, Terri, but try rearranging your rug so that it runs widest ACROSS the room, not lengthwise. It will fit under your furniture better, and although as much of it won't be showing, I think it may look better, given the size of the geometric pattern. I'm curious to know what you think. :)
