Design Dilemma Bathrooms

How much space around standalone tub?

Is there a standard for how far these should be from a wall? Our little nook for putting in a tub is small and there would only be a few inches between the tub & walls on three sides.

That works as long as you have a forward entry to tub.

would suggest you tile remaining tub walls.

how are you going to clean behind the the tub on all sides? and yes, if that close, you prob want a tile on the wall.

since it really won't be 'freestanding' visually, (this, to me, would look better w/decking. I'd hate to have to clean around this one)

why not just do a contained one w/deck around those 3 sides?

if yours is like this, then it's doable

this would be the minimum I would want. especially if there is a window to clean, lightbulbs to changes, floors to dust, etc.

Jenny Yun, you need to check back on your original plans/marketing brochure. If they show a separate shower to a bath that is what you thought you were buying. A builder can't change from having a shower and a bath to having a shower over a bath without contacting the buyers. Get your solicitors advice if the builder has made this change without going through the proper channels. A Certificate of Occupancy certifies that a home can be lived in. It is a requirement of most local government councils that an occupancy certificate be issued prior to the purchaser of a home taking occupation. If I were you I would be getting my solicitors to confirm about the Certificate of Occupancy before moving in and asking some questions about drainage and mould growth under the bath. Your solicitor should represent your interests, and knows what the law says, so they should be helping you. It is such a pity you have already settled - I hope it is not too late. If there are a lot of apartments with the same problem you may need to consider a class action if you can't get proper rectification from the builder. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls.

Hi, unless you take a bath at least once a week I'd skip the tub. I'd rather enjoy a bigger walk in shower, which is also a lot safer than climbing into a tub to shower. If you have the space instead of a tub and shower I'd consider a double vanity to give you extra storage space. It's a little luxury you will come to enjoy when everyone is getting ready on the morning.

by "other options" i mean that you should consider all other options for locations of fixtures..there is already plumbing along each wall so swapping the location of shower and bath or vanity isn't as challenging as if there were no original plumbing in that area and if you plan to replace the fixtures and tiles rearranging the fixtures will only be a small percentage of the budget and it's a shame to limit the final result without at least considering other options..and although there is enough space to have the vanity hard up against the wall my suggestion is to have the vanity away from the wall to make it easier to clean and also because the small nook is an ideal space for hanging a hair dryer and with the luxury of so much space it will be easier to install a vanity away from the wall

Hi oklouise The sad part is the existing bathroom is beautifully finished! This whole house was well finished and really well built. It was sad to have to demolish things that were so well done, but the design problems made changes necessary. The bathroom has porcelain wall tiles floor to ceiling on all walls and a white polished porcelain floor (slippery as all hell, and a mongrel to keep the grout lines clean!) is laid over a full 300mm+ of solid concrete, under which are all the drains. Outer walls are 200mm of reinforced solid concrete. Tiles on internal walls are over cypress timber frame with generally two layers of lining glued, screwed and nailed on - and there is way more timber in the frame than necessary. I think the builder (who built it for himself) thought the house would last forever and would never need to be changed in any way. Exact distance from external door to wall is 1.1m on both vanity and shower side. The door combination is 1200 wide and placed dead center. It's worth noting that 300m on the vanity side of the door is full-length frosted glass panel and it's possible to infringe a bit on that area if absolutely necessary, provided there's enough room for the door to swing safely (as it swings toward the vanity. The space is NOT meant for a free standing tub. Build it in. Unless you love floor cleaning nightmares.

Just because online photos may exist , does not mean the flooring around them, or the walls, or base trim, did not look positively disgusting six months after the photo was snapped.

The novelty of your "fantasy look" will get very old, very fast, in the real world bath.

You do not have enough space IMO you need at least 12” on all sides next to walls and honestly even then you will need to be in the tub to clean the wall behind it. Get a nice saoker alcove tub and forget the whole fad of freestanding.

Best practice is to treat it like your coffee table for physical access. 24”-30” all around. You hardly ever see them done to best practice.

This fad shall too pass, and the emphasis on easy to clean and sanitary that so attracted your great grandparents to get rid of their freestanding for a built in will return.
