It can either look really dramatic or too dark, depending on the size of the room as well as your other components. I've attached a couple of images of our work using dark tiles, the smaller bathroom we have surrounded the bath with dark tiles but then balance it with an extra large mirror to bounce the light around the room. The larger bathroom we have taken the floor colour way onto the wall but used a different texture on the walls for drama. Hopefully this gives you more of an idea but you shouldn't to nervous of the room being dark, it's where you can create a contrast as well as textures. Hi Chris The cheapest option is Grind & Seal, but we usually recommend Mechanically Polished Concrete for inside of a home. This is by far a better option, if you were to go for a Matte or Satin finish it is less expensive than a higher gloss finish. Mechanically Polished Concrete does not have a top coat sealer requiring drying and curing time and does not need re-applying in the future which will save time and money in the long run. Because Polished Concrete does not require drying or curing time it can be used as soon as the process is completed unlike the Grind & Seal option. All floors are slippery when wet, a non slip agent can be added to a top coat sealer which would be the Grind & Seal method which we do apply in a shower area if there is not a shower base. Polished Concrete in Matte and Satin finish does have a very good slip rating, has no grout lines as with tiled floors where dust can get trapped therefore it is a wonderful easy to clean flooring solution. Hope this helps, I have provided some details regarding the 2 main processes below There are 2 different finishing processes / methods that are commonly called Polished Concrete, they are very different so it is important that you know the difference & which process/method you want and which is being used on your concrete Polished Concrete - 12 to 17+ step process During this process the concrete is ground to the desired level of stone exposure. After grinding the concrete surface, the Polished Concrete process begins. This process has a densifier applied in multiple stages that is absorbed into the concrete which hardens and strengthens the concrete. A Polished Concrete Floor is Polished in Multiple stages in a Refining Process using diamond tooling & resin pads. A penetrating sealer is applied in the final buffing stage to complete the process The "Polished Concrete" process has "NO TOP COAT SEALER" applied therefore there is no drying or curing time required so your space can be used as soon as the process is completed Grind & Seal (a 3 to 4 step process) This is NOT Polished Concrete. Grind & Seal is often referred to as Polished Concrete, this is the cheaper substitute that gives a "Polished Concrete Look" With the Grind & Seal method the concrete is ground to the desired level of stone exposure and a TOP Coat Sealer is applied such as water based, solvent based, urethane, acrylic or epoxy requiring 5-7 days to dry & cure

I'm looking into replacing the old carpet and tiles in my 2nd-floor apartment with engineered floating timber floorboards. The body corporate and strata committee has approved the installation of floorboards. But I have some concerns about noise transference from my apartment to the downstairs unit (and also to the units either side) if timber floors are put in. The block is about 15 years old (with concrete subfloors). The flooring company I've been chatting to claim they've been laying timber floors in apartments across Melbourne for years without issues relating to noise, and they claim a 3mm high-density underlay will be adequate for sound insulation (normally what they use if a body corp doesn't give specifics). However, the internet is teeming with expensive horror stories of noise issues in strata blocks related to people installing floorboards in upper floor units. Adding to my concern is the fact that the acoustics/sound insulation in my apartment building isn't the greatest. Having said that, my upstairs neighbour has hardwood floors, and I've never heard so much as a peep from that apartment in 5 years. So, as much as I'm itching to ditch the old carpet and ugly tiles in my apartment, are timber floors (even with the recommended acoustic underlay) in a 2nd-floor unit just too risky in regard to potential noise issues? We have 600 x 600 tiles in our bathrooms, one of which is a similar size to yours. I love the look, but we did place the cut tiles on either side which was a little more work, but had a better balance for our bathroom, in our opinion. So much of this is, as Aus Joinery Kitchens said, personal choice. If it jars with you, it’s not for you, but if you’re just worried it’s not ‘standard’, I’d say don’t worry.
