Contemporary, Composed & Serene Family Home Transformation

The driving concept for this Federation house was to create spaces of silence and noise.

The owner, a cellist for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, required a space for practice as well as quiet contemplation away from the busier family areas of the home. We were asked to create a home that was timeless yet contemporary, composed and serene.

The front lounge and adjoining music room were stripped of the existing carpet, fireplace surround, drapes and light-fittings. The exposed timber floors were then sanded and stained dark to ground the room. It was important to modernise the house whilst celebrating it's beautiful architectural & artisan features.

The rooms have great proportions and high ceilings with beautiful detailing, so we wanted to highlight those by painting walls and all woodwork same colour to give uniformity. This gave us a canvas to then bring in a few selected pieces that didn't crowd the space. The new ceiling pendant and rug bring the other pieces together and wraps the room in warmth.

Our clients now have a room for conversation, music, reading and contemplation in front of the fireplace, a room without TV and other distractions.

The hallway leads through to the kitchen and family room toward the back of the house.

The new open layout better serves the daily rituals of a contemporary family with a connection between the Kitchen, Family room and study desk for the kids.
