Bedroom window dilemma

Hey everyone, we are building a new house and trying to decide what shape, size and positioning for the 2x kids bedrooms. Their look out will be the fence (about 1.5m from fence and placing on putting some plants in there).

We are deciding between
a) a high light window (more wall space and options for furniture)
b) a tall narrow window (more wall space again but possibly more light?)
C) regular, square window in middle of wall (nice symmetry and light).

Thoughts??

add windows to suit the most likely furniture arrangement and views looking out not the view looking in...given the choice i always like windows towards the corner rather than in the middle of a wall as i think it makes the rooms look more spacious and is more private from outside .. the bottom of a small bedroom window should be at least 90cm off the floor so that a bed and/or desk can fit under the window and window covering are up out of the way ...windows looking east or west can overheat rooms so smaller rather than bigger and what style? awning, sliding, double hung, louvres and combinations including fixed glass can all be good in different situations but depending on your climate the extra ventilation may be a deciding factor and then you have to decide on colour and material!!

Definitely choose windows high enough for furniture underneath. It gives so much more flexibility in a kids room.

Hi Katie, can you move your office somewhere else while your guests are staying? Maybe put the bedhead under the window and push it hard against the left hand wall, that will give you about 67cm between the bed and the door, room to sneak in a small bedside table (if queen bed is 153cm wide and room is 220). Not ideal as the person closest to the wall would have to shuffle down off the end of the bed but it's a very tight space for a queen size bed. You could maybe then put a small chair or two and table against the wall between the end of the bed and the wardrobe for a sitting area for your guests. if your desk needs to stay would it fit along the wall where the bed head is currently? Assuming you don't want to swap the bed out to a double.

The master bedroom in my previous home faced north. Floor to ceiling window getting full sun during the day, and a street light directly outside at night. So, an exterior shutter, internal blind and curtains allowed light and heat control for various times of day and season. The master bedroom in my current home also faces north with a floor to ceiling window, but no street light. On full moon nights though, it shines right in. Once again an external blind controls light and heat, and interior blind and curtain gives me options for different times of day and season, eg. we love the sun coming in during winter, but not summer.

i still don't understand your plans...do the measurements include the wardrobe spaces, we need measurements of the rooms excluding all built ins) does upstairs include a master bedroom, two smaller bedrooms, a walk in storage room, one bathroom and the upstairs living area?? we need the size of all the rooms including the decks to know how they can be used ...no point rearranging one side if that spoils how the other rooms can be used ..and is the house on three levels and/or why is there extra stairs from the laundry and is this a renovation or a new building?

This is the downstairs plans (colourful agent ones), I am onsite at work at the moment and don't have access to the formal plans. There is an area added onto the back room, opposite the kitchen heading out towards the backyard. Works have already begun. This area (6.2x3.8) (not shown in these plans) is designed be an indoor/outdoor entertainment room, by the pool. Please feel free to provide feedback relating to the master/office space. I do not require a full time office at home, only in the event of a level 4 lockdown plus some after hours work being done from home. We already have an office/warehouse- separate from home.

Maybe a mixture of both a tall narrow window and highlight windows.

We had highlight windows in our kid’s rooms in a previous house (the rooms were built into the attic space so we couldn’t change them). The kids hated them. They felt like they had no connection to the outdoors and felt trapped. As adults standing up, we could see out but kids are shorter and all they could see was wall. I’d avoid only highlight windows at all cost.
That said, the suggestion that the bottom of the window sill be at least 90cm above the floor height is a good one. It renders the space more flexible. In another house we had floor to ceiling windows in the bedrooms. My eldest hated those too (no pleasing some people). He worried that he’d break them and they limited the possible furniture placement.

I agree with Genkii about the high light windows. The examples shown by dreamer are appealing and practical. Personally I prefer full length windows, they give greater visual access to the outdoors. Using plantation shutters on the lower half is a consideration.
