What colour should I paint the pots on my back deck?

Hi,

I have painted some pots grey that were left at the property when I bought it but not sure they suit by back door

?? Are they too muted, too small, wrong shape?

I’m a big fan of using what you have. So keep those pots but maybe paint then the colour of the doors, or walk on the wild side and pick up a bright colour from the door mat. With the plants don’t forget you can plant more than one type in each pot. A spilling groundcover would cover most of the pot. Something like Silver Falls but for shade.

Lovely print. I had a peacock feather print and I had a colour called glacier Grey behind. Think it was Wattyl . Again like your other walls it is a greenish grey but darker. I also had my prints on a charcoal wall..loved that too. As you said the picture ties in with the chairs and now it's not necessary to add more matching colours. I'd buy a couple of sample pots and paint large pieces of cardboard. With the other walls I would consider painting them in whisper white (Dulux) a very universal colour that ties in nicely with all colours.

Unless you have the money to update everything else to better complement the bricks, painting them will give you a much more updated look. Over the past 18mths I’ve been working on the front and landscape of my current house, including painting the bricks and it has made the world of difference! I’ve attached a before and after photo! Thanks guys for the recommendation . Here are the sample paints against the floor board . Leaning towards natural white and casper white 1/4 . But since casper white is cool tone . Has any one mix warm floor and cool color wall ? And then grey pebble 1/4 for bedrooms .

Dear Creatively Challenged , I can recommend Dulux Colour Consultants, I gave up after about 5 sample pots . At the time it cost me $150 and if I used dulux paints I could claim a full refund . That was 12 years ago . I didn’t realise at the time just how good they were , the colours are still in fashion but it’s ready for another paint job for sure. It was such a relief to have someone in who is trained and fully understands colours and fashion and what goes with what . I finally stopped stressing about it and got the job done ✅

Love how you are giving new life to your pots, succulents grow well in sun and shade, love bigreader ‘s ideas and love dichondra silver falls spilling over the sides, I have it in lots of pots and it is just beautiful

Have a look online, Ebay or gumtree, lots of people now sell succulents , it’s amazing what is available and so many gorgeous ones to choose from to make a fab display for your lovely pots.

Hi Anna,,
In your ideas book with the larger pots, instead of having them side by side, stagger the look by bringing the smaller one forward and moving them closer together , you could always then add a smaller one in there as well.

Hi Julie

I would have liked that but the verandah/deck is not wide enough. It goes around the whole of the outside of the house but it's less than 2metres deep. already the plant in the lowest pot on the right is almost too far out on deck. People walk down the deck from driveway and along to french doors front right-hand side 95% of the time rather than down the stairs straight to the french doors.

Actually, I think I can manage it if I put the pots with plants with less foliage at the front. I'll upload a pic once done.

Hello Anna, one thing I have found worked well for me was to paint concrete pots in Porters Paints Liquid Rust - it gave them cohesiveness, character and class with mighty little effort. And has lasted perfectly outside in all weathers for years now. I left mine mostly black, but u can turn it fully rusty if so desired.

To me, the scale of the pots looks wrong against the door. However this can be overcome by planting 2 standard plants. The height of the standards will balance the entrance. Some plants that you might consider are, Geisha Girl, Roses, Lilly Pillies, etc. Your nursery man will assist you.
I would choose your plants and then repaint the pots. For instance, the purple flowers of the Geisha Girl plant would complement the rug and look superb if the pots were a Tuscan yellow/gold, IMHO.

I love Julie's ideas of succulents , especially the pics with several different ones in the same pot . As far as the grey , I wouldn't -- you look like you like colour and excitement , so I'd go yellow on the pots -- a similar or slightly brighter shade then the cushion on the couch or chair to the left . It would tie it all in , and make that lovely mat look more like a feature too IMO .

Without knowing 'the bigger picture' ( what else is 'happening' around that wall ) , just what I see I'd be inclined to add a light either side of the door too -- stick to the same shade as the joinery ( personally , I'd go for a 'clean rustic; style with say 15 squares each side ) , or if brave ( and assuming the guttering etc is probably a similar charcoal as your door joinery ? ) , go for the same yellow as your pots -- add a Wow !

In my humble opinion I feel like your pots would look great in a brighter colour? Yellow perhaps? I also agree with an early comment about the proportion. They do look a little on the small side but I am all about using what you have if possible. If you do try and plant larger plants in those pots just be mindful that they will outgrow them quickly and could become root bound.

Paint them Yellow to bring the seat cushion colour and yellow in the mat to create the balance. And add some more mixed yellow flowering plants, will give some texture.

Great Anna, such a hardy plant, could look gorgeous and they throw an abundance of white flowers , tough as nails, just like to keep moist and a wipe over leaves to keep them shiny, mix with a pot sansivera , soft foliage and structural foliage and it could look fabulous

Oops I see it is a sansivera just a different variety.
