Where would you hang family portraits in a two storey home?
Comments (8)First of all. Family portraits? Old Masters? Snaps of people at Birthday parties, small children? Black and white or colour? What kind of frames are they in? Are you prepared to spend money on the display? Are you trying to hide them or make a feature of them? I personally hate family photos scattered about! Besides the light damaging them, there’s the family pecking order which always exists. Who gets the best spot? My solution used to be the back of the toilet door when the kids were small. I cut them all out and assembled a collage, but with age they grew yellow and faded. Now I have a large photo which my 3 kids had done for me as a Mother’s Day gift just after they left home. It’s in a plain black and silver frame and it’s in black and white. It’s right opposite my bedroom door in the hallway. If you are a visitor, unless you visit the loo you would not see it, and even then its probably not that noticeable. Comments (5)Your designer should be able to suggest some ideas, but a lot will depend on your budget, and the slope of the land. If the rear of the house is very elevated to make the most of the views, you would be better off with lightweight construction that can be maintained easily from your balconies, rather than masonry construction, which can get expensive if you are a long way above the natural ground level. So you need to consider your budget, the height of the building, the surrounding environment (urban or rural), how it looks from the river, the orientation, your climate, and how close the new building is above the flood level. Comments (7)I would bring the roof line out with a pergola. Use hardwood timber and allow a natural patina to develop. This will help to give depth to the front of the home. Dont paint or stain the hardwood timber. Maybe a glory vine, but nothing just as good, and less work. I find the teal timber paint old-fashioned. Can it be stripped back to natural timber if hardwood? Otherwise a light charcoal grey would look better as the patina of the pergola timber would go this colour. I'd remove the existing garden. Maybe a native cottage garden around the periphery of the area to include some small gums for vertical accent as well as bird appeal. Keep the lawn area, but control any wandering kikuyu if this is the current lawn. Alison...See MoreNeed some ideas on modernising out 70’s brick house
Comments (16)Don't try and modernise this home, it has a lovely mid-century character that you should build on. I suggest to all of my clients that they should live in a home for at least 12 months before spending big renovation dollars. Understand how your house works with the change of seasons, and the existing electrical and plumbing services. Sometimes when you are on a tight budget in an old house then boring things like gutters and hot water systems are more important than supeficial aesthetics. Elements that are not original, such as your roller blinds at the front aren't contributing to the look of the house. The right landscaping could provide the shade you need and look much better. Love it for what it is, rather than try and make it into something that it is not. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See MoreDash
