Small laundry room - door vs window
Hi there,
We are building a 4 bed, 2 bath home. We have a small laundry room and are wondering how to maximise the space. Would it be better to get rid of the laundry door and just have a window for ventilation? That way, we could have an L-shaped bench and cabinetry on 2 walls.
Dimensions are 1.7 x 2.04m
I’ve been trying to find photos of similar designs but no luck so far. Any thoughts?

Comments (8)Michelle, I'm not a builder but am building with hubby, a single storey limestone home. Our daughter built a two storey limestone home just down the road, that hubby also built for her and the extra foundations she had to install would be at least twice more than we have for our single storey, not to mention that there were allot of short walled founds leading off the perimeter of her home to assist in less likelihood of wall roll out and the inspector called it. Cost for you, will depend on whether you have adequate foundations to carry a second storey and usually that is never the case. All the lower walls will need double the support and it usually has to carry on down to the foundations, depending on whether you have a solid concrete slab or concrete stumps that are accessible. This would mean most of the plaster being removed and hoping that you find no nasty surprises as far as the condition of the existing frame in the home, the builder would as I mentioned, have to add structural supports to carry the second storey. Most often, second stories are built with a hardiplank type exterior and certainly not brickwork as you would then difinitely have to have extra foundations in for such a reno and you would have to start asking yourself if it isn't better to demolish as this type of reno can be extremely costly. You might be lucky but probably highly unlikely, to have adequate structional integrity to be able to add a second storey, without everything I have mentioned to be skipped in any way. I hazzard a guess that such a reno would cost you $250,000+ and maybe more. Would love to know what you finally decide to do and your builders estimate. Good luck. Comments (15)@siriuskey - thanks for the images, can see it definitely works nicely with some of those, esp that first one! unfortunately being an original californian bungalow, the front windows aren't very big so im hesitant to cover them; they are similar in width but not quite as tall as the windows in that middle picture. our bedhead, when i am standing comes up to about chin level (im 165cm) - i don't think the picture i posted does it justice as you can't see the bed legs haha...so i think it would end up looking like the middle picture :( @girlguides - i like your suggestion for shuffling around the ensuite layout - it does make sense to have the door infront of the vanity. we will try to get a bit of extra length on the ensuite (all based on council town planning restrictions due to proximity to our neighbours) and that should allow for the entrance to sit comfortably in the corner of that wall with some nice space around the vanity...will still be tight to fit the bed, side tables and door tho!!! side tables are 65cm each, and bed is approx 190cm... and width of the room is 4m on each side....so will potentially be a skinny 750cm sliding door to the ensuite...which of course is better than a skinny entrance door to the bedroom tho!!...See MoreWhat to do with small laundry
Comments (9)We’ve had the dryer mounted and above washer all along the same wall as the sink. It just doesn’t work. Today I changed things around to have them side by side under window, it seems to work much better. I love that second photo Dreamer, that is my ideal!! 4 years agoAgree that the area is too small to be also a thoroughfare to outside. Our last house was exactly as your plan. Sliding door out to boundary wall. I never used that door. I always carried washing out through family room to clothes line. I have attached photos of small laundry's that could show the space utilised better.

4 years agoAs mentioned by Kate and jo wst, a single door with glass panels might be ok, with a side window. But, I still think that if your clothes line is not on that side of the house, it is probably quicker to walk through to other exit. In my previous house, that was the case. And with the boundary fence, only giving a small walk way along the home, then it would be more comfortable to walk through the home. As previously posted. I had this exact scenario in my previous home. Never actually used the sliding door on a regular basis.
