check with local council but we found that a 2m tall double brick fence with solid gate has made the most improvement but the best results will be achieved if you think of noise like water and block anywhere that it can squeeze through around the edges and down the side boundaries past the house to create an enclosed courtyard ..depending on your front set back you may have to have the fence closer to the house (with tall shrubs on the outside) to be allowed to have the best fence height and we also added double glazed windows, solid core front and internal doors and check the inside of the house to see what gaps you can plug and i'ts also been suggested that wardrobes, tall bookshelves and furniture against the front walls can help deaden outside noise and the tall shrubs also help with the psychological feeling of privacy from a busy street
Sound proofing relies on no gaps. So you need to pay attention to the joins and below the gates. Rubber flaps below help. As do gates that can close with overlap.
