Soundproofing walls in a mid terraced house

we moved in a mid terraced house build in 1900 a few months ago and realise the walls are so thin that we hear voices And music from next doors. It’s not our first mid terrace but it never happened before. We have had someone come over to discuss installing some insulation but were told they don’t do any wall insulation in mid terraced house as theres little point (they said mid terraced house is like hugged by adjacent houses so it should be warm, which isn’t the same ad how we feel...). But now the noise issue is a little bit getting to us I wonder if there’s any other way to sound proof walls? Or has anyone here got installed some wall insulation in a terraced house?

You can overboard the walls with a noise deadening plasterboard and add insulation under the floors as some sound travels this way.

Ideally, if you have enough space and don't mind the disruption build a standalone partition lining in front of the shared wall. Before building the partition make sure all air gaps in the old wall are sealed with acoustic sealant. Make sure a 25mm stand off air gap between old wall and new partition. Partition could be timber or metal framed, 90 / 100mm frame thickness, filled with acoustic insulation and then boarded with 2 layers of 15mm thick acoustic plaster board. You can go a step further and separate the plasterboard from the framing by using special stand off framing members called resilient bars which create even more separation.

Total thickness of partition and air gap might be about 150-175mm so that's how much space you'll lose.

If you have fancy coving and / or a fireplace this needs to be considered as you may need to replace it or remove it.

Hello Fianou, Congratulations on your charming home. I think it has so much potential. I love the idea of teal, it is fresh and welcoming. I was thinking to give the home some street appeal and to also make it extremely functional. I would see if you could afford to put a wonderful wooden deck out the front, and then I would have window shutters painted teal placed on either side of the windows to give it street appeal, if you could afford to paint the brick I would paint it in a happier white tone with the blue accessory trim on the shutters on each window and also on the roof trim to tie it all in. On the deck I would have flower boxes painted in the same teal colour or whatever colour you choose to link in the whole story. I can see it can be so sweet and charming and a real place to call home. The timber fence at the side would also link in with the decking at the front. Ive had a really busy 4 days & have been totally warn out, sorry for the lack of communication. We are changing the plan to have the roofline open up at the back like the latest pic posted by dreamer, but to also open up at the front for a patio entrance. Doing things this way gives us the high/raked ceilings in the kitchen/living/dining rather than stepping the whole area down. As for the design of the ensuite, kids bathroom, laundry, pantry, spare toilet & mudroom..... We've had a chat about it & have made a few changes. We have spoken with the 'architect' & he is drawing it up with the changes that we are happy with😊 Thank you all so much for you opinions & help, its been very much appreciated & has helped us get to a point that we are very happy with the design now, couldnt have done it without you guys💚💙 When the shed gets built we will have a granny flat setup in one end of it for the older kids or visitors so that will work out for us now too.

I'm no expert , but I can't quite work out why you/they did a few things ? Presumably , people would have headed to the the 'right' on the stomework , with the original design ? It looks like there is a pathway there , whilst the wrought iron gate near the garage looked like it was ( purposely or not ) quite uninviting . So you add a really nice front door and foyer . I understand that , and encourage it . You change the windows . Presumably remove a door or ranch slider . Update everything . Again , pretty easy to understand . You add a hedge so people don't head there . Fair enough . But here's where I scratch my head . The new front door is further out -- not even sure if it is ? Maybe just a larger terrace ? So it needs a new roof profile . You change the tiles to long-run iron , so the tiles come off . You put in a new garage door . It actually looks like you have sloped the 2 roof ends -- a lot of $$$ for almost no visual effect IMO . And it even looks like you have added a new roof and profile on the left hand end , where there was a carport ? Me , I would have kept the roof profile , and therefore the same timber and framing . I would have done the new front door and foyer a bit further inwards . If I wanted more roof over the entranceway -- a flat or slightly sloping roof with a grey concrete pillar in a style sympathetic to the blade . And just me -- I would have most likely done a new , slightly larger garage on the left hand end , and used the garage space for another bedroom , or an office , study , sewing room , spa , pool table -- almost any excuse . OR have left the garage as it was , but painted the door , The 4 glass panels wouldn't have looked out of character IMO -- hey , its the customers decision , but I would have utilised the same roofline , maybe added onto the left end ( or the right depending on the construction and requirements . If you are spending money you want more space if you can IMO , rather than just an updated look , but everyone is different .

Cute house, these little cottages are really great little homes mostly. They are just little. For best value for money I think you could make gains here.... Remove the awning. Change the verandah roof so it's more sympathetic to the house. If budget allows change out the carport skillion roof for a nice low gable. Paint the trims the same colour as the rest of the house. In a house this small keeping trims neutral will help it appear more substantial rather than pokey. Put a new rear deck on that goes all the way across the back of the house and is at least 3.6m wide. That will increase your living space dramatically in summer. Use a cafe blind or louvre roof to allow full sun in winter. The cafe blind will be cheaper overall as you may not need a DA for the deck without a hard roof structure. Depends on your area and council but in general certain decks without solid roof can be exempt development. Of course if it's a high wind area louvres will be better. Use freeform and oval garden beds in the front yard with a path that winds in between them to the front door. Adding informal interest to the garden will make the house appear more substantial and add interest and detail. The home is fairly plain. Use any style of planting that appeals, architectural foliage, floral, low maintenance etc. Just ensure you have nice varying heights and interesting foliage colour. A tall shrub or two would be good. The backyard is already quite shaded so either create a woodland garden or perhaps have some of the tree's out the back pruned to enable more light. Plan out your outdoor spaces, veggie patch, relaxation zone, fire pit etc and define them with plantings. Gravel paths are cheap and effective. I would also be inclined to create a euro laundry and steal the existing laundry space for your kitchen.

When my son bought his house he had acoustic plaster board fitted between his lounge wall and the neighbour. If I’m honest I don’t think it was half as effective as we thought it may be. Then the 3 children moved out as they grew up and silence returned.

Perhaps they are generally loud and noisy and haven’t realised just how loud they speak or have the TV up. Could you speak to the neighbour stressing your concerns?

Just acoustic plasterboard on it's own won't do much. Sealing all perimeter gaps and other holes + building a separate partition with a separation air gap should make a big difference but I appreciate it will take up space.

this was about 75mm: 10mm gap, 50mm stud filled with rockwool RW3. 15mm soundshield plasterboard. made a worthwhile difference. not sound 'proof' but never expected it to be, there is flanking to consider. worth looking under floors if timber suspended as Jonathan says and especially if joists go into party walls. I have a smaller room to tackle in future and will be looking closer at things like SM20 or noisestop panels for that.
