Living Room Design Dilemma Home Decorating

How to style empty space?

I've just rearranged my living room furniture to create a more open space, however I now have this random space behind the lounge (where the plants are) which I'm not quite sure what to do with. The TV on the wall is being moved to another wall. Any suggestions are welcome..

Hi Shaye,
What a gorgeous room, a bench seat would look gorgeous, a taller plant in similar pot, then put the other two together even add a third as a group at each end of bench add a gorgeous cushion or two and you have a beautiful area

Thanks Julie, I was actually considering a statement plant - perhaps a traveller's palm or giant bird of paradise.. 😊 Great suggestions.

Hi Gioenne... We are empty nesters but have two dogs (one large) which is why there is no coffee table. I've ordered two small side tables from a local furniture maker which will have a modern feel but made from reclaimed wood.. We let our dogs on the furniture so it has to be durable... I'm leaning towards modern low sofas. We entertain a lot in summer...

Suzineedsahouse, what is the era or character of the house you have moved into, because perhaps that will influence design style regardless of size? Also, if you have been knocking out walls is it likely to be more open plan?? I moved from a small 1960's era granny flat into an as-small Art Deco 1940's apartment and found I went with more classic furniture with the second place because it just suited the aesthetic of high ceilings, floorboards, wide skirting boards, fireplace, ceiling roses etc. Having said that, I live in a block of 6 apartments, and I have seen the other apartments decked out completely differently (all of similar layout), from really modern, to mid-century, also one with a real retro art vibe, and they all looked great and seemed to suit the space fine. So maybe go with your taste in the end??

I agree with strawberry47 but it just makes it like home. You will have to measure the area first your dining chairs have to sit on the rug fully when pulled out on all 4 sides and then add a bit more for good measure otherwise it will pull the rug every time you want to sit. What is really good option is to go to local carpet place ask them to show you what remnants they have and pick nylon if they have it. Rugs are about 4m wide so you only need about 2.5m and get them to overlook to the size you need . They are usually under$100 for a linear metre. It really won't break the bank. Try Carpet court and places like that. Good luck .

I love all the above ideas . I'll take a slightly different tack though -- maybe get you thinking ? I don't like the balance of the house sorry -- the garage at a lower level , but without a corresponding split level roof , I personally don't like . To me , it makes the house look 'stubby' . Depending on your budget , and need for space , I'd either add a 'higher' window in place of the garage door -- in line with the window next to it . OR I'd change the garage door to a ranch slider -- turn the garage into the master bedroom , or an office ( presumably with the laundry at the rear ) . The problem with that is that some people may mistake that for the main front entrance . I'd then add the garage to the left hand side , BUT I'd bring it forward by approx 1.5-2 metres -- the new roof could then be at the same level , but as it comes further foward , it would give the illussion of a split level roof . There's a slight advantage that you'd have a bit more space too -- maybe even extend it out the back , and then the boat can fit too ? Between the new garage and the front door , I'd then do a pagoda style veranda -- 200 x 50 beams , stained a nice medium brown , probably with clear acrylic panels above . The right hand eve , and the window sills , I'd also do in a mid brown -- personally , I think it looks a bit too grey and black at present . The front door looks nice , but again I'd do it in a nice mid-brown colour , rather than the lighter varnished look that appears to be on it now . Obviously , alter the driveway , so you can get in the new garage , and park 2 vehicles side by side , using the existing and new driveway . And then gardens as above . A bit ( lot ? ) more expensive compared to the above , but you'll have a nicer , and nicer looking house with more room , and obviously a lot higher resale IMO .

Agree with Julie. Height would be good in that corner. Either the plant or you could put the white bookshelf against the blue wall. If that leaves the tv wall blank, add real timber floating shelves instead. The bench seat in front of the window would be nice too. But then you might want to pare back a little. Everything looks lovely, but is just on the edge of too much imo. Maybe totally clear off the entertainment unit and put back 3 items or so. Use a few of the (entertainment unit) ornaments and maybe a smaller low level plant on the coffee table instead of the one you have there. As I said, just my opinion!

I was thinking a sofa table behind the lounge with a lamp on it and single wicker reading chair in front of the window plus a statement plant where you currently have the lamp its a lovely light filled room

Had a similar dilemma at my mums with a long lounge room. She originally had four two seater couches set up in two pairs, one focussed on tv and one for daytime reading. Swapped it all out for a three seater couch along the long wall and two swivel reclining chairs, not the heavy solid ones. Put a coffee table under windows and plants to side. So much better as you can see through to the windows.
Could you swap your small couch for two chairs? It looks like you have chairs at other end, maybe swap. Otherwise like siriuskey’s idea of a table behind couch and a seating under window.

I'll offer a different perspective . I guess it depends on how cosy or open plan you want the room to be . Basically , you have moved everything inwards , I assume the TV is going above the long , low cupboard , and likewise I assume that is an entrance door along from the 2 windows ?

In your existing layout , you and visitors walk in the door , and you have a tall white shelf unit straight in front of you ! Bang ( at least visually ) , so you've closed everything in , walk around it , then along to the kitchen !

I'd move that white shelf to 'this' end of the room , have the TV and that low unit further towards the door , move the 2 couches towards the windows ( even move them further apart and/or do the shorter one on an angle ) , maybe even put a pot plant between the 2 , probably move the picture towrds the windows OR add a 2nd picture .

Basically , make use of the space , rather than closing it up and then 'filling' the left over space .

What about a reading area, once the tv is moved, you could fit a comfy arm chair and a bookcase in the corner. It's one thing that kinda makes sense to go and hide yourself away. there's plenty of light through the windows there.

If you have kids then I'd tuck a play table with paper and crayons and some toys in a big basket and a rug back there. My son would want a chess set on a special table in front of that window
