What a beautiful room, for me I would like to see a simple light coloured rug, I don't think the coffee table works and the pretty pink foot stool clashes with the sofa. I would like to see a larger timber Asian coffee table like you find in Thailand, very simple and also used as a bed base in the larger size. A larger table or soft foot stool will allow for books and a try with coffee tea etc. I have the timber coffee table

Siriusky thank you for your suggestions. I found this in a local shop and it’s also in the running. I agree there is something off about the Rose pink - I was initially aiming for an ottoman that I can prop my feet up on to be comfy while watching Netflix and sipping Prosecco! (Lol) I’m not sure how to achieve comfort and practicality as, if I get something like this simple Asian coffee table, how do I introduce an ottoman comfy for feet-propping? Won’t the space become too cluttered?

A large Ottoman or a group of 4 or more small fabric cubes? That's a pretty table, which you could use with those asian silk cushions for everyone to slip on top while you sit back and enjoy your favourite tipple

Both the Ottoman and the coffee table are too small for the space. I don’t mind the Asian coffee table if it’s large. Pop a cushion on top for your feet when TV watching.

The Asian whitewashed coffee table is indeed, much larger than either the glass table or Rose ottoman I have tried so far.

Kate, thank you for your ideas. Yes, I think I agree that the cream and Rose carpet underneath is too anemic in that space. I’ll move the darker carpet back in and try the much larger whitewashed Asian coffee table in photos above from a nearby shop.

Ok ladies! I don’t waste time! I’ve switched and put the darker oriental carpet back in for contrast and ducked out to buy this whitewashed - much larger- Asian coffee table. I so far think this coffee table looks much better in the space. What are your thoughts?
If I keep it (I can return both this Asian table and the Rose pink ottoman within one week) I would like to add a large tray to the top of the coffee table with a small artsy grouping.

If you all agree this table is better, and the dark carpet too, what should I do now about sofa cushions/throws? Keep what I have now, or go more neutral, or.....? Thanks

sorry I still think you need a bigger table maybe two side by side, more expensive though, looking at the size of the carpet makes the table look even smaller, do you have other chairs on this side that would sit on the carpet?

i really like your room! I'd love a room like this... its just my style. I think the timber table looks better than the glass its better proportioned. I think because the timber is a warm colour and you have lots of reds and cream some pale blue or teal accents would help balance the colour palette and bring it all together. If it was my place I'd actually paint the wall behind those paintings and above the shelf a striking teal. but even just a few cushions will a bit more blue would do it.

I’ve attached some more photos, just so it finds you a more complete idea of the unusual shape and design of the room, and it’s limitations.
It’s got no less than 3 doors :

1 door from main entrance hall with mimi vestibule

1 set of pocket doors with beautiful stained glass inserts of shells - these pocket doors leaf to the formal dining room and then on to the main lounge room.

1 glass feature door which leads out to the outdoor deck on this top floor.

Plus the room has built -ins in PNG Kwila and Rosewood. These built ins are a whole wall of bookcases and storage underneath (the TV wall) , a whole wall of built in filing cabinets drawers( under my laptop) and a wall behind the sofa of a rosewood feature benchtop with storage doors underneath. The remaining wall has no built ins, but has the pocket doors and glass outside door.

The home itself is what’s known as a Timber Pole Home. Built back in the 80’s, with no less than 56 Turpentine tree poles used for construction. The ceiling is vaulted (some rooms more than others) and wood paneled with massive support beams and skylights.

I’ve got a feeling I’m nearly there with the room design, but think it’s got such specific structural elements that make furniture placement very tricky and limited- so much so that the “cozy” effect can very quickly turn into too busy and crowded.

In case anyone is interested, and these additional photos help them, keep the ideas coming!

I do understand some of your points that the timber coffee table still looks a bit too small, but in a room this size with such a particular shore and specific needs (library/tv room/study/laptop area) I struggle to see how I could possibly fit in a bigger table or do anything else with different furniture placement.

For those of you who suggested maybe adding an armchair to opposite side of the 2 slipper chairs to balance the coffee table and sofa, it may be helpful to know that the 2 slipper chairs against the pocket door wall can easily be separated, and that I ALSO have 2 further exact matching slipper chairs I could bring in to balance - they are currently in my master bedroom. I’m worried that might make the room too full though and no room to maneuver.

I’ve also experimented with adding a fluffy small round fleecy rug to top of table, to soften the look, and I’ve also been playing around with the 2 additional stools: one fluffy white, and one gold velvet. So far I feel they are excess to needs and clutter up the space, but I’m very happy for suggestions and I could be proved wrong!

Me too,I have aso lived and worked throughout Asia being a big fan of everything Japanese, you have some lovely pieces. You mentioned using PNG timber did you spend time there

I'd love to see a really dark olive green on the walls instead of that very 80s shade of pale green. Teal would be lovely as well in just more a fan of dirtier colours.
I think the fluffy throw reminds me a bit to much of those old toilet surrounds!

Also I know this is probably very controversial given they look beautiful quality, but I'd love to see what the room looks like without the shutters. There is just so much timber with your beautiful floors and built-ins. I wonder if it's a room which even needs window coverings? If you had a beautiful aspect and not too cold a climate wouldyou consider unadorned windows?
Sorry I realise I haven't even discussed coffee table etc. I like the idea of larger timber and think a paler timber was fine.

Your comment and suggestion is not controversial at all, but raises interesting design points.
They are not shutters, but timber louvres. They can be raised and lowered as 1/2 panels- 2 per each window. When they are “open” it’s straight out to the deck and the elements. IE no glass Windows behind- just screens to keep out the insects.
As the home is in the tropics, and currently it’s steaming hot and the humidity level is sky high too- in order to keep the room fully Air Conditioned (for now) it’s necessary to keep the louvres fully closed.
So- it’s “either/or” with this window style, as they are not “traditional” windows.
That’s why there is the glass door to the balcony and the skylights in the ceiling- to let in natural light in the summer steamy season.
The only months we don’t need A/C are winter months here, which is June- September aprox.
In those months when excessive heat has gone, I can open everything and there is a beautiful view out to the tropical rainforest vegetation and trees. Then, it indeed looks as though there are no window “treatments” as I can raise all the louvres.
I once (years ago) got a quote to put in more normal windows, but the cost was exorbitant and besides, I felt it was ultimately the wrong thing to do as it would take away the unique character of this pole house.
Tomorrow when it’s light, I can post some photos of all the louvres raised just to give you an idea.

I also wanted to add (since I have now posted photos of the room from pretty much all angles) - that if anyone has inspired ideas for a different furniture placement, feel free to suggest anything!
As I’ve explained above, there are certain features in the room that make some choices of placement impractical or impossible, (locations of power points without unseemly cords dragging, windows with louvres that have to remain closed to contain A/C for most of the year, awkward room shape with built ins and shelving/storage, 3 doors, (making access and flow specific) , location of TV arial, etc
But - having said all that- I’m willing to experiment with any arrangement!

OK you mentioned trying some different furniture layouts, so would you consider the following, You have a lot of wonderful things, I would like to see you open up the room to the exterior door and verandah and the beautiful lead light double doors. At the moment they are lost. Would you be prepared to try removing that small sideboard?, your mirror would go back onto the wall. And remove some of the small tables and stools. Too many pieces of furniture in the room is causing the floor space to feel cluttered. A rough idea without the chairs but they may still stay the same or split in the room

But I am now a bit confused as it never occurred to me you were in a warm climate given the furnishings preference. I thought there mayhave even been a fireplace somewhere!!
Ok so now I'm thinking colonial style (and I think a dark khaki green in the walls could still work) with some cane pieces instead.

Having lived for some years in the tropics I wouldn't do dark walls it will make it feel heavier and hotter even though I'am guessing that you use this room mostly with aircon to avoid the humidity hence the style of furnishings

Have you considered painting the shutters, door trims walls and ceilings white, leaving the cabinets, doors and flooring natural timber along with moving some of the furniture?
