Paint colour ideas for wall panelling/ wainscotting

We have white vertical plank panelling through the first half of the house but the walls are not high, 2.4m. My conventional cautious self says paint everything panelling, walls and ceiling Natural White and it can’t go too wrong. The less conventional part of me would on like to inject a bit more interesting colour. Advice, thoughts, help would be much appreciated

Because the ceilings are low, the different colour of wall and panels are, by the photos making the ceiling appear even lower. So therefore painting the walls and the panels the same colour may be better.

i am liking your mid century furniture......but the wall panelling, in my opinion, does not match the vibe of your furniture.

I’m pretty much with .dreamer, but 50s furniture would have been placed in houses with wainscoting, so not odd, what is throwing me out is the cool colour of plaster. Start by painting it to match the wainscoting then reassess. Colour and warmth can be added by your wall hangings and furniture.
Natural white is slightly warm, could go warmer shade again.

Looks a warm inviting room but the pale blue walls are a cool colour. First thing I would do is paint the walls Dulux China White. This will make a big difference to the feel. Grab yourself a sample tub and paint a big price of cardboard, move it around the room and you will see that it will look great in your room.

I favour stone against cedar wood tones. It's a cool neutral and usually contrasts with the warmth of the cedar beautifully. It also creates a neutral backdrop against which you can accessorise and change to your hearts content without needing to repaint. Here's some idea's from Taubmans site.... https://www.taubmans.com.au/homeowners/colours/colour-trends I would probably go platinum or pebble half. Although those colours look heavily pigmented on a chart, against the richness of cedar they would appear very pale but not as stark as a white. It's also quite period correct and easy to live with.

I love the wood . Its the rest that needs the work IMO -- particularly the carpets . Nice in themselves , but very dated . Also its a bit hard to tell the exact tones because of the lighting being on , but I suspect the white of the walls is too white , but also I personally don't like the walls and ceiling being done the same tone either . The roof and mouldings I'd keep in a sharp white , the walls I'd go an English white or Spanish white or even a slightly reddish tinge ( but not pink if that makes sense ) to reference the warmth of the timber . In fact , that's probably a lie -- I'd be more likely to wallpaper -- the bedroom in say light yellow flowers on an offwhite paper , and the carpet would work then ; the lounge in a burgundy and gold striped paper would be the schizz haha , and again the carpet may even live another couple of years !

Thanks both - sounds like white all the way is a good plan. Original panelling was natural timber which I would have preferred and is in line with mid-century decor but at the end of a big renovation I have run out of steam and money so painting this section of the house is going to be as quick and cheap as possible. Again, many thanks.
