Windows Design Dilemma Bedroom

window shutters PVC or timber?

I have my heart set on plantation shutters in both my bedroom and theatre rooms and am undecided as to whether to purchase PVC or timber. I understand the PVC are less maintenance but can also discolour in quite a short time or have they improved of late? Any advice I have found to date has been quite old. Any advice would be appreciated.

Timber anyday . I'm definitely no tree hugger , but when you can choose between natural or PVC , why would you go fake , even if it is 1/4 or 1/2 the price ( within reason obviously ) .

Timber can also discolour if they are not maintained. They dry out from the sun, and need oil rubbed into them.

I have white PVC shutters throughout my home. They are still as white as the day they were installed - 6 years ago.

Yes, our harsh Australian environment does hammer our external finishes but if exposed timber is coated with a good quality finish initially ( i recommend 4 coats minimum ) then an ongoing maintenance coat every couple of years, your timber can still look great many years down the track. People just need to understand if you want that beautiful natural timber look you have to put time in to maintain it.

I got plantation shutters in my bathroom because my window is in the shower. Then I decided to get them in all my rooms. Wynstan do cedar on the larger wide windows over 70cm I have one window 1m wide. They say the pvc bows after a while so they recommend cedar. They're painted white and they do all look exactly the same. However I'd say the cedar feels nicer due to its weight, you can feel the quality. I rarely open the windows and its more for privacy, distributing the light than air flow. But they are also great because you can open the window and get both air flow and privacy with shutters.

Any chance you can post a photo of your front entry, to give us a better visual? Regarding the handles, if you want to be consistent with handle finish throughout house, then sure, get black entry door handle. But it's not entirely necessary.

It's always been a bit of a no-no to mix wood with aluminium, however I totally get what you are saying about the pros of using aluminium upstairs. I personally would have gone totally one or the other, only because it bugs me when I go to a house and there is a mixture of window types. I would only do it if it was very difficult to tell them apart ... I know that they can make aluminium now so that it is the exact width of the wooden windows so has the same visual effect.

I've been researching too, as I was wanting them.
If you like dust..then wood. As they are much harder to clean than pvc I was told
Wood was cheaper...
But I want ease, with a duster!

Not sure re colour change as I was looking at White.

Anyway...not getting them as I wanted 1 long one, 600x2130 twice,
(2 lounge Windows )
Couldn't do it without having two shutters on one window, as Windows too long, not strong enough in one long shutter,
wanted a stick to adjust them....couldn't do it, had to use hubbies dirty fat hands to open and shut them, as he gets up first, and it's his OCD thing to open curtains then Windows..reverse each night
all 4 would be different angles..
Front of the house...not worth my time cleaning dirty finger marks, and making sure they are all open at same angle each morning. I wouldn't get out of bed!
$1750 for the two windows.
$500 for fat venetians with tape and a wand, so they have a similar look.
Pull cord can be hidden inside box at top.

Sorry..just had to get that all out..

As I wanted shutters!
