Colour suggestions for house exterior

Hello. I have purchased an ex-govie house and am seeking advice on colours to go with the red brick. We have done some landscaping out the front and are moving onto the face of the house. We will be painting the roof, fascia, fibro, gutters and pergola poles.

Colours we are considering are a white/beige for the fascia, gutters and poles (perhaps Dulux Beige Royal Quarter) and either a dark red or charcoal for the roof.

We are after suggestions and advice on which colours will best suit and any recommendations on budget friendly improvements we can make.

We have plans to add a verandah and replace the windows in the future however it is not in the budget at the moment.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you to everyone for your comments. I've removed the photo showing the old door as we have added a new timber door and temporarily removed the screen.

We have planting a choisya (mexican orange blossom) hedge in the garden bed and will be planting some other perennials/annuals in front of the hedge. A crab apple has been planted in the grass section out the front of the house. The large bushy tree to the right of the house is a very overgrown photinia which we are slowly trimming down. We are planning on keeping it as it provides us privacy from our neighbour.

I’d go monument on gutters and fascias . Could add crisp white to columns and pergola if you wanted to lighten up the look or do it all monument.

I think it would be good if you took more pictures of the exterior - but from different angles - so it would be easier for professional builders/designers to give you the sound advice that you need. :-)

Hi Caz Your house has a lot of character. To freshen it up I would look at painting it white. Resene Triple Black White. It's a beautiful soft white but not creamy. The red guttering, which you decided not to touch, I would paint a grey with a green edge. Perhaps look at Resene Half Gravel or Resene Tapa. What I'm trying to do is find a dark colour that blends with your existing roof colour. For all the beautiful fillagree work, (what appears to currently be painted a shade of yellow) and poles, use a paler neutral with a green undertone like Resene Ash/Half Ash. If you want to accentuate the details on the poles or those corner pieces, you can double the strength that is used on the poles i.e. If you used Resene Ash, use Resene Double Ash. Have a play around and decide what colour intensity you like for all the details but don't go too dark, just so you can see a contrast. I think having the beautiful red tiles on the porch is fine and you don't necessarily need to keep the red on the guttering as it is drawing the eye to look at it. That scheme will freshen the house up beautifully. No pictures of front door but a glossy dark grey colour, similar to the colour in the porch tiles will tie it together. It will look beautiful. Would love to see more pictures.

Whilst dark is trendy now , and to a certain degree is taking over from grey , it is hot in summer , but also i think you risk the house looking too 'negative' -- plus in 5 years when you are sick of it , its harder to paint over . The green and beige were 80's , and does look dated , but the green in particular does suit the site . One option would be quite a crisp white , and slightly greener green trim -- more modern and cleaner looking , but its been done lots too . Something a bit more radical would be a greeny grey ( sort of a greenish tinged muddy khaki ) with white trim -- that satisfies the darker look , the green , the grey , and the cleaner white for contrast -- hard to get it exaactly right , so probably a few test pots needed . The other 'lazy' option would be to keep the beige , but do all the trim in a bright sunshine yellow -- it wouldn't be too overpowering IMO with only the trim in yellow , the beige would compliment it but also tone thge yellow back , but it would modern everything too . Nothing like a coat of paint to freshen things up. I’d be wary of doing old gutters white. They may have imperfections that white would highlight. And you’d need to be careful to get a white that worked with the terracotta roof (with its lovely patina) anything too stark would look unflattering.

I would do all your trims in monument as you can see it will go beautifully with your bricks, add a bench under your window this will balance the height difference, group your pots together and add a new outdoor light, landscaping your garden using grasses and lush foliage will make for a very lovely home.

I think your house looks 'old' because of 3 things -- the beige , the roof but also the green fences .

Even though the windows are darker , I wouldn't change the beige to Monument -- it doesn't feel right to me . I'd go crisp white , but I definitely would do the fences in a charcoal -- it doesn't need to be Monument or even a brand in my experience -- a $40 cheapie stain ( or the $100 concentrate ones you thin out ) is fine , because every time you clean your fence , no matter how much you've paid , some comes off , so you redo your fence every 2 to 5 years .

Do those 2 , and maybe a bright red entrance door ( the door seems a mid red in a couple of pics , white in one I assume is earlier , but black in others -- maybe a screen door ? ) , and then stand out on the street and look -- you may not need to do the roof then .

You say you have done or are working on the garden -- I am again making an assumption that you have conifers or similar under the bags ? Thats fine , but it needs gardens and modern plants too -- green leaves , yellow leaves , red leaves , dark branches , even grasses and cactuses . It all adds to it , but also modernises the feel -- the large bushy shrubs in most pics could easily have been what someone planted 50 years ago !

A basic idea to extend the pergola and add matching brick or concrete piers to the base of two or more posts, this would help elongate the building and take away from the boxy apperance

It looks like you have a lot nicer entrance door now , but it just blends in . I know its not big in the scheme of things , but it does seem a pity .

I'd still do all the beige in crisp white , and see how it looks .
