Lounge/dining size dilemma

Our lounge room is 4.34m wide. Would you increase it to 4.54m wide at the expense of the kitchen. Borrowing space from the kitchen would mean reducing scullery walkway to 1100mm from 1200mm and reducing walkway between kitchen island and cooktop with underbench ovens from 1200mm to 1100mm? What are your thoughts?
Keep kitchen as is or add width to lounge/dining? Thank you for your time. Our floor plan is almost complete. :)

As you won’t be moving pantry I’d keep as is

without changing the size of the scullery, laundry or kitchen you can have more space in the living by making the island narrower and any stools would not be obstructing the walkway

So many questions from my point of view. The furniture all looks a bit squashed. Is it correct that you want a circular kitchen island bench, or do you mean to place stools around an overhanging bench in the kitchen? The raised section near the dining table would have to be removed, or are you planning a new Kitchen? What is happening down the other end beyond the small mat? is this an entrance from a deck or back garden, or does the room venture further? If you are to change your sofas, make sure they are sympathetic with the new chairs and as the chairs look a plain creamy colour, should go with most fabrics or leathers. Due to the room not being over spacious, be careful not to select furniture on the larger scale. Have a look at Jardan furniture and Globe West, both these organisations have great furniture at not too exorbitant dollars. Arthur G steps up the ladder, made in Melbourne. I would prefer you started with the dining furniture, as this is quite cottagy moving forward with your new armchairs. The dresser too - although you could paint this an interesting colour so as not to apologise for it's heritage, again with the new chairs. Hope this assists, but a floor plan would help me.

Hard to tell how it was constructed without being on site. Any good builder or designer could inspect and advise. I've designed similar but it was due to the slope of the site. The kitchen, living, dining and deck was 3 steps down from the remaining house. It would of had to have extra fill and concrete, etc. so it worked out better. Could be a similar situation here perhaps? Although sunken living areas were very popular years ago........

It keeps life interesting to have a Summer setting taking advantage of the view and outdoors, then a Winter setting keeping thoughts inside. The room seems large enough to cater for a few seating arrangements. A 3-seater sofa and two armchairs (which can sit together with a small table between) and a coffee table in centre (to cater for kids play time (have a shelf underneath to quickly hide toys in a basket. Then in Summer the 3-seater with it's back to thecupboard wall - although leaving traffic space and maybe a table where the heater was for flowers and framed photos. Then a decorative chair or two to add spice - even a couple of dining chairs look good against a wall, they can look like artwork. Image 1: this is a clever way to hide a TV. Image 2: interesting chairs together Image 3: Great wall unit and tonal colouring. TV's come as mirrors and artwork these days. Image 4: Dining chairs against the wall and walk space behind sofa to outdoors. A TV is behind the sofa, so not being the focal point.

Just make sure that you are comfortable sitting and not in great need of s cushion. Cushions are great, but if relied on for support while prolonged sitting over 20 minutes, forget it and go for good back support. These days the settee are for lounging and lying on not sitting in a comfortable posture. They are often too deep and too low. Best advice, set aside 6 hours for lounge shopping, sit for at least 10 minutes in your choice, keep on going back and having a sit. Never purchase that day, but see how your back is. Then go back. They are an investment in ‘no back’ trouble.

3m x 900 island will look more in proportion to the size and shape of the rooms...a 1200 deep island is much too big for anything bit a giant room

Did not consider this @oklouise. My partner is stuck on a chunky piece of stone! But yes, perhaps as our dining/lounge is long and narrow it may be the better option.

Agree with okl. 900 will be plenty. The length is enough of a statement.

I would keep as is, 1200 x 2640 long, mine is 1200 x 2700 and we love it, 900 x 2640 will look too narrow/skimpy in your design

I would also consider a small sink in the island or next to the cooktop for ease of access for filling pots and draining boiling water, as it is there's too much distance between the cooktop sink, and could be quite dangerous crossing between the current kitchen sink and cooktop with the entrance into the scullary

If you do reduce the depth of the island use a Waterfall edge benchtop to add bulk, this as per The Block, also notice the positioning of the cooktop to sink

Great idea to reduce the width of the island, and have waterfall edges. 1200 is a very wide island unless you have a cooktop in the island.
900 is plenty of room to have stools to sit up to. And this will greatly benefit the living areas. My peninsula is 950mm x 3600mm and does not look skinny. Our living room in 5400 wide. I would definitely choose a 900mm waterfall island with a wider living/dining room.

Wow! So much to think about! Hubby has tuned out, he is over it! And over me with me overthinking everything. He has always wanted a big chunky (1.2m) slab of stone. However he's never stepped into the kitchen to do anything! :) We had initially left a picture window (non opening) by sink out in kitchen. Now Hubby has changed his mind, he'd like a Gus strut opening window (canteen style) to alfresco. With this change now, do we change sink position to end of island? I've always been adamant about NOT placing sink on island but.... position to end of island?

Can I run this by you all.

1. Extend length of island by 200mm (by reducing passage either side to 1100mm) or keep 1200mm either side and keep it same length as benchtop behind)

2 Reduce island width from 1200mm to 900mm with waterfall ends and 40mm stone top to give "chunkier " look to island but open it up so lounge/dining is larger.

3. Reduce scullery walkway to 1100mm from 1200mm. Or shall I keep it at 1200mm?

4. Where sink is currently positioned by window overlooking alfresco…shall I relocate it to end of island bench or keep where it is? (I will have to train myself, child and hubby to dump dishes in scullery sink, not island.
