Just bought our first home, and need help with design please!
Comments (20)Congrats, great potential. I agree that a grey like limed white would be great on the walls. The ceilings look lower than some 60s houses and painting both ceiling and walls in the one colour or 1/4 strength can accentuate the height of the rooms. White trim on the skirts and door frames are not too bland but those windows may look better framed with a darker trim. This colour palate will be a great canvas for you to add colour and texture that you indicated you like in furniture, baskets, throws etc. Suggest sticking to painting pre move in and once you've lived there a while you will know what you/house needs. Comments (5)We have so many ideas for this home! Your first step needs to be to establish your budget. Then list the items you want to fix in priority order. Note that some renovations will be a LOT easier to do before you move in, and others will be easy to do afterwards. Externally - I would remove the front retaining wall and replace with limestone. I would consider replacing windows and making them larger too and redesigning the front to create a more inviting and obvious entrance. Internally - the big ticket items are always kitchens and bathrooms and these are much easier to do before you move in. Retiling the main living area would make a big difference as would a repaint and new window furnishings. We could go on....but I am guessing that as it is a new home your budget will be limited. Best of luck, it is an exciting time in your life!...See MoreOur First Home. Maybe Our Last?

Comments (13)Without knowing what the benchtop is , it may be able to be cut and joined -- in that case I would look and see if the breakfast bar part can be either moved a metre 'left' ( in the picture just above ) and then either keep the DW there , or under the new 'joiner' piece . Alternatively , if you got rid of the breakfast bar ( or spun it 90 degrees so it raan along the wall ) , and moved the DW under there , you MAY just be able to sneek a 1 metre or so wide island in there . I assume you like the colour scheme , and don't want to change , but personally I find the darker grey ( especially the ceiling roses and the ceiling corniches ) is overdone . It may be an optical illusion , but the veranda doors and kitchen windows look lighter , obviously the dining chairs and even the kitchen bench are lighter again -- that darker grey just seems 'very old' to me , and not in a good way . I would have gone maybe 50% lighter , or even a rich yellowy English cream -- halfway between the wall tone and the gold . Nice but quite 'grey' in attitude at present IMO ....See Morebigreader
