do you need a bigger new garage or could a tandem carport and storage shed be more useful ...depends on your car and storage needs, building materials for the house and proposed new garage, how you want to use the old garage space and local climate but we need to see a site plan with dimensions of the house, existing garage and available space between house and boundaries and have you checked with council to find out what's legal including required setbacks from both side and front fences but, given the choice, i would rather have garages to the front and side of the house to allow for more backyard and less space wasted on long driveways

Do you need a double garage or a single garage. Or will you use the space for storage not vehicles? Depends where you are building the proposed new smaller garage, but in reality to fit a vehicle it would still have to be 3.5 x 5.5 at least, so not much space for garden is added.

Thanks oklouise. We have space to have a single garage built at the side of the house - on a long driveway. We dont need a bigger garage.. just surprised how expensive they are to build a new one so considering fixing old one! It does take up a large chunk of the back garden - maybe 25% so its a bit of an eyesore really. But dont want to knock it down and regret it so tricky to know what is best!

Could you renovate the current garage to a single garage and a covered entertainment area.

if you don't need more enclosed car space consider adding a basic carport at the side of the house and refurb the old garage for more living area instead of spending renovation money just for car space
